Bois-le-Roi combines striking architecture with opportunities to enjoy nature and leisure activities. At the Église Saint-Pierre, architectural features from the 13th century meet a reconstruction around 1840; the Sentier de la biodiversité takes you through several types of landscape, and cycling tours offer a range of focuses. The Île de Loisirs adds sports activities to the mix. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether culture, nature or exercise will shape your days.

The Seine and forest as landmarks

Bois-le-Roi lies north of the Fontainebleau Forest and borders the Seine to the east. The leisure and recreation area is bounded by the Seine and its towpath to the south, and by the forest to the north. The municipal boundary and the limits of the recreation area refer to different geographical areas: the Seine marks the eastern side of the municipality and, at the same time, the southern side of the leisure area.

Architecture at the Église Saint-Pierre

The Église Saint-Pierre de Bois-le-Roi has three naves and pointed arches. Its architectural details include water-leaf capitals dating from the 13th century, as well as a square bell tower from a transitional period. Capitals are the upper parts of columns or pillars; the term “water-leaf” refers to the shape of this architectural feature. The church was almost entirely rebuilt around 1840. Thus, the medieval-dated capitals and the later rebuilding phase stand side by side as two clearly distinct periods in the building’s history.

The Sentier de la biodiversité

The 14.1-kilometre Sentier de la biodiversité runs through the entire municipality and takes in the banks of the Seine, the Forêt des Viarons and the Base de Loisirs. The route was inaugurated in October 2023 and offers opportunities to encounter local wildlife and plant life. Nature observations are seasonal: if you plan to spend plenty of time on them, take the time of year into account. Also check the route details before setting off.

Two different cycling tours

The “Circuit cyclo touristique de Bois-le-Roi” starts at the Scandibérique or at the SNCF railway station and is designed to help you discover the town. A guided cycling tour starts at the station, follows the Seine and leads to the villas known as “les Affolantes.” The tours therefore have different focuses: the Circuit centres on discovering Bois-le-Roi, while the guided tour combines a ride along the river with the villas as its named destination. You can choose the type of tour that better suits your interest in exploring the town or following this particular stretch of the Seine.

Activities at the ĂŽle de Loisirs

The ĂŽle de Loisirs de Bois-le-Roi offers golf, tennis, horse riding and Urban-Sliding. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check its current availability, as individual offerings may change. A free shuttle runs between Bois-le-Roi station and the ĂŽle de Loisirs; it also provides access to the watersports centre. The shuttle may be seasonal or subject to change, so check the timetable before travelling.

Getting there from Paris

You can reach Bois-le-Roi from Paris Gare de Lyon on Transilien Line R in about 40 minutes. The approximate journey time gives you an idea of how long the trip takes; check the connection for your travel date if you want to plan around it.
