An old traditional path connects the hilltop hamlet of Belvédère with the coastal settlement of Campomoro. In Belvédère-Campomoro, hiking trails through maquis and coastal meadows meet the history of the Genoese towers.

Coastal Landscapes and Hiking Trails

The protected Campumoru-Senetosa natural area lies south of Propriano in Corse-du-Sud. It covers 2,300 hectares and 24 kilometres of coastline, from Pointe de Campumoru to Anse de Tivedda. Granite, green coastal meadows and extensive maquis scrubland shape the landscape; Phoenician juniper predominates in the maquis. The Campomoro-Senetosa coastal trail crosses the meadows of I Pozzi and passes the rocky headlands of Scoddi Longhi and Scalonu.

The Canuseddu circular hike follows a stream and passes old terraces. Its viewpoint looks out over the coastal settlement of Campomoro. I Pozzi also leads through coastal meadows, here accompanied by stands of myrtle and juniper. Along the way are a spring and a historic threshing floor where wheat was threshed. The circular hike starts in Bassa Torra and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Another route option is the hike between Belvédère and Campomoro: it passes through holm oaks, tall maquis scrub and rocky boulder fields, and can be started in either village. It is listed as taking 1 to 1¼ hours. By comparison, I Pozzi is described as a circular hike; times may vary depending on conditions. The trails therefore differ both in their routes and in the time allowed for walking them.

Genoese Towers and History

The Tour de Campomoro offers views of the Gulf of Valincu, the distant peaks of the Incudine and the beginning of the wild coastline. The Genoese towers of Campumoru and Senetosa are accessible on foot. The Tour de Campomoro and its fortified enclosure were protected as a historic monument on 4 August 1992.

The tower houses the permanent exhibition “Barbaresques”. It covers the history of Genoese towers in Corsica, the Barbary invasions, the looting of Sartène and the construction of the Tour de Campomoro. Alongside the protected architecture, the exhibition offers its own perspective on the history of the coast: it presents the construction of the tower in the context of the conflicts and attacks that are the subject of the exhibition.

Access and Accommodation in the Natural Area

The Campumoru-Senetosa natural area can be reached by sea and via two land access points: from the north at Pointe de Campumoru, and from the south along the coastal trail from the port of Tizzà. The Refuge de Senetosa is located in the protected area and serves as a resting place for hikers on the approximately 60 kilometres of marked trails between Campomoro in the north and Tizzano in the south.

Hikers, horse riders and kayakers can stay at the Refuge de Senetosa seasonally for a maximum of one or two nights. Check the accommodation options before your trip. The facilities available on site therefore differ considerably: the trails explore the coastal landscape, while the refuge offers a limited stay for the groups listed above.
