Hiking and cultural heritage give Letia two distinct focal points for a stay. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether the walking time for a longer hike or the churches and historic buildings will shape the day. The trails differ both in route and in the landscapes they pass through.
River Landscapes and Hiking Trails
Letia is part of the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse and is known for its varied flora. The Liamone River rises here at an altitude of 2,100 metres on the western slope of Monte Cimatella. In the northern part of the area, the GR 20 passes over Cimatella; the Mare a Mare Nord crosses the entire width of the municipality. This makes a practical difference when choosing a route: the GR 20 is located in the north near Cimatella, while the Mare a Mare Nord crosses the municipality from one side to the other.
Hiking Along the Liamone and Through Chestnut Groves
The “Randonnee de Letia à Guagno-les-Bains” hike is a variant of the Mare a Mare Nord. It is a PR hiking trail that starts in Letia and ends in Poggiolo. The stated walking time for the round trip is 4 hours and 30 minutes, with an elevation gain of 400 metres. The walking time therefore covers both the outward and return legs, while the elevation figure refers to the ascent—two different measures to consider when planning your day.
The route follows the Liamone through a holm oak forest to the bridge at Guagno-les-Bains. Numerous natural pools in the Liamone along the way invite you to rest and cool off. The “De Renno à Letia” route offers a different landscape: it passes through a chestnut grove along the Mare-a-Mare variant and ends in Letia St-Roch. If you choose based on the route, you can distinguish between a riverside hike through a holm oak forest with pools and a trail through the chestnut grove.
Church Art and History
The chapel of Saint-Roch was dedicated to Saint Roch in 1686 and became the parish church in 1703. In the early 1920s, the church was adorned with three frescoes by Ivan Choupik. Saint-Roch also has three paintings and a baptismal font that are protected as historic monuments. The parish church of Saint-Martin houses the painting “Donation du Rosaire”, which is also protected.
The artworks have different focal points: Saint-Roch brings together frescoes, protected paintings and a baptismal font; Saint-Martin is associated with the protected “Donation du Rosaire”. When exploring the churches, you can therefore learn about their history as well as distinguish their respective features.
Another historic landmark is the Castello della Catena. It was built in Letia on a natural rock arch above two gorges. Archaeologists date its construction to the 9th century. The building’s location and date give local history a distinct focus alongside the sacred artworks.
Getting There and Planning Your Stay
Letia can be reached by two roads. When planning your stay, the walking time for the hike to Guagno-les-Bains is a useful guide: the 4 hours and 30 minutes applies to the round trip. If you are looking for accommodation in Letia, this can help you estimate how much time a hiking day will take and how much time you will have left for church art or the history of the Castello.
