Around two kilometres south of Guitera-les-Bains, the Bains de Guitera thermal spring lies on the right bank of the Taravo. It is located on the D83 between Santa Maria-Siché and Zicavo. Its precise location helps distinguish the spring as a topic in its own right from the town’s historic buildings.

Thermal spring and former bathing facility

The spring water is sodium-rich sulphur water with a temperature of 44 °C. The former thermal bathing facility is dilapidated and no longer in operation. For your travel plans, this means the spring is of thermal interest, but the facility is not an operating bathing venue. If you are travelling specifically to visit an operating thermal bath, you should bear this distinction in mind.

Castle and circular route

Casteddu di Bozzi stands on the hills west of Guitera-les-Bains. The castle played a part in Corsica’s military history from the 14th to the 15th century. Its location and historical context answer different questions: Where is the castle, and what place does it hold in the island’s history? For travellers interested in Corsican heritage, it is a point of interest in its own right, alongside the town’s thermal history.

The Chemin du Casteddu di Bozzi is a circular route that takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. This time estimate helps you plan the route as a separate block of time. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Sacred architecture

The ruins of the Pieve church of San Ghjuvani lie on the plain between the baths and the village. The church was abandoned at the beginning of the early modern period, and the seat of the Pieve was moved to Zìcavu. Thus, the precise location of the ruins is linked to a change in the ecclesiastical centre. East of Guitera-les-Bains stands a Romanesque chapel, now in ruins, dedicated to Saint Peter; it was later converted into a tomb. The parish church also retains the dedication to San Petru of a medieval chapel below the village. Together, these sacred sites reveal different historical traces: abandonment, conversion and the preservation of a dedication.

Local production

At the exit from Guitera-les-Bains is Chez Paul Antoine, a livestock farm and producer of charcuterie and cheese. The regional products include cooked meats, jam, terrines and veal; availability of individual products may vary. If a particular product is important to you, it is advisable to enquire in advance. The combination of livestock farming and processing adds another perspective to the town’s cultural history, focusing on food production and specific product groups.

Locating the sites

The locations provide a concise guide: the spring lies south of the village on the Taravo, Casteddu di Bozzi on the hills west of the village, San Ghjuvani on the plain between the baths and the village, and the Romanesque chapel east of Guitera-les-Bains. This makes it possible to distinguish the thermal sites, castle and sacred places geographically as well.
