Get to know Zonza through its terraced village layout and cultural sites. For planning hikes, the trails at the Aiguilles de Bavella offer several distinct options in terms of duration and difficulty. When choosing your destination, you can weigh whether local history or a specific hike should be the focus.

Village History and Culture in Zonza

The village has been laid out in terraces since the 17th century. Old granite houses sit on rocky outcrops overlooking the Asinao valley. This architectural style gives the village a distinct historical character. If a traditional village layout matters to you when travelling, Zonza offers a tangible example.

In the village centre, the Musée de la Résistance corse is devoted exclusively to the history of Corsica during the Second World War. The focus is particularly on the resistance fighters of Alta Rocca. The collection comprises 130 objects and documents, and five multimedia displays are available in French, Corsican, English and Italian. The subject, scope and languages provide a useful guide if you would like to include a cultural stop in your travel plans.

The religious buildings also reflect different architectural influences. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the neo-Gothic style. The Romanesque Chapelle Sainte-Barbe stands isolated in the Santa-Barbara district and is made of granite and rubble stone. Known as the Santa Barbara Chapel, it is part of Zonza’s historic heritage.

Aiguilles de Bavella and Hiking Routes

The Aiguilles de Bavella massif overlooks the pass of the same name, at an altitude of 1,218 metres. One name associated with the massif’s seven main peaks is «Sept Tours d’Asinau». Hiking trails accessible from Bavella at the Aiguilles are described as suitable for different ability levels. When planning, it is therefore worth considering not just the scenery but also the specific route.

The alpine variant of the GR20 is a marked, challenging hike for experienced hikers, with technical sections and panoramic views. One marked technical section is secured with a steel cable. Allow about four hours for the round trip to Punta di u Pargulu. The full loop via the alpine variant takes seven hours.

The U TAFONU DI U CUMPULEDDU – TROU DE LA BOMBE route offers a different time commitment. It is rated easy, takes about three hours and involves 200 metres of ascent and 200 metres of descent. At Bavella, it passes through a Laricio pine forest to a spectacular natural feature formed by erosion. The estimated times make the difference between the two options clear: about three hours for this route, about four hours to Punta di u Pargulu, or seven hours for the full alpine loop. You should therefore consider the difficulty and time required together.

Seasonal Planning and Finding Accommodation

The Hippodrom de Viseo in Zonza lies at an altitude of about 950 metres among Laricio pines and is considered Europe’s highest racecourse. Every summer, it becomes a venue for a village festival. Five horse races are held there between late June and late August; the programme and dates may vary from year to year. If you are planning a visit around the races, check the specific event dates for your travel year.

For seasonal access to Bavella, you can park in Viseo and use the summer shuttle service. There is also a paid car park right in Bavella. Check the seasonal arrangements before your trip.
