Givet’s architectural heritage is shaped by Vauban’s fortifications and local blue stone. Charlemont, historic trails and paths along the Meuse offer different ways to explore the landscape, the town’s history and its culture.
Charlemont: Fortress and Landscape
Charlemont stands on a rocky promontory in the heart of the Pointe de Givet Nature Reserve, overlooking the Meuse and the surrounding area. The site has been protected as a historic monument since 24 October 1927. A marked outdoor circular trail passes through Pointe-Est and the former village; from there, you can see the Meuse and Givet. This is where the history of the fortress meets the landscape.
Trails Through Givet’s History
The Mont d’Haurs Discovery Trail covers the town’s history, military architecture and local vegetation across ten stops. It begins at Square Albert 1er on Quai des héros de la Résistance. As the local starting point may change, it is advisable to check it before your visit.
The “Sur les pas de Méhul” tourist trail presents Givet’s heritage from the perspective of its most famous resident, Étienne Nicolas Méhul. Eight totems and five panels cover the history of the town’s historic monuments. The information texts are available in French, English and Dutch; materials may be updated over time.
Méhul’s own story is also connected to Givet: he was born here in 1763 and played his first musical notes with the organist of the former Récollets church. The church and the “Sur les pas de Méhul” trail therefore offer two different ways to explore the town’s cultural heritage.
Monastery, Tower and Chapel
The Récollectines convent was founded in 1680 by nuns from Philippeville, with the permission of King Louis XIV. The former convent now houses the Pierre Tassin Cultural Center, with exhibition spaces and rooms for cultural events; the program may vary.
The Tour Victoire is a cylindrical tower with three levels. Originally, it served as the keep of the manor house at the southwest corner of the Castrum de Givet Saint-Hilaire. The Chapel of Bon Secours offers another layer of the town’s history: it was built after the First World War and blessed in October 1932. Together, these buildings provide different historical points of reference, though they do not share the same function or date of origin.
Along the Meuse
The Trans-Ardennes Greenway follows the Meuse from Givet to Mouzon along a former towpath. You can walk along the route without being disturbed by cars or other motor vehicles. Seasonal guided cruises offer views of Pointe de Givet from the river. As the cruises operate seasonally, check before your trip whether they run during your travel dates.
An Annual Event
The Foire aux Oignons takes place every year on 11 November in the streets of Givet. The event features stalls selling local products and dedicated craftspeople, and has a convivial atmosphere. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates and arrangements for that year.
When choosing a hotel in Givet, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Charlemont combines views with the setting of the nature reserve, the trails highlight the town’s history and military heritage, while the Greenway and cruises bring the river landscape into focus. The Foire aux Oignons is an annual event held on a specific date. These distinctions can help guide your plans without prescribing a set order for your visits.
