Vrigne-Aux-Bois can be explored through tangible traces of its industrial history and two walking routes. The Forge Gendarme combines a historic complex with ponds and a hydraulic system, while the botanical woodland trail offers a different focus, with woodland species and information panels. Church architecture and a protected painting add to the local cultural heritage. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up an industrial site, architectural history, and nature-related themes.
Industrial history at the Forge Gendarme
The protected Forge Gendarme site includes the pond and hydraulic system. The complex was completed in 1825 and included workers’ housing known as “la Caserne.” It was built around three ponds, two of which remain and are fed by the Vrigne and the Claire. Those interested in the technical side of industrial history will find a tangible point of reference in the hydraulic system. The name “la Caserne” refers to the workers’ housing and adds a residential dimension to the site.
Two walking routes, different highlights
The discovery trail at the Forge Gendarme is a 2-kilometre circular route around the main pond. The path is flat and suitable for everyone. The botanical woodland trail in Vrigne-aux-Bois has a different focus: its 1.8-kilometre circular route goes around the outer edge of the town park on a marked, easily accessible path. The trail introduces 20 woodland species through 23 information panels.
Length is not the only factor when choosing between the routes. The Forge Gendarme loop focuses on the main pond, while the botanical woodland trail centres on woodland species and the information provided about them on the panels. At 1.8 kilometres, the botanical loop is also 200 metres shorter than the 2-kilometre route around the pond. Both are circular routes, but they differ in their subject matter and the areas they go around.
Church architecture and protected art
The Church of the Immaculate Conception was built after the previous church was destroyed during the fighting in 1940. Elements of the choir and chapels from the earlier building were incorporated into the new one. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The church is closed to the public.
Another artistic landmark is the painting “Calvaire” in the Church of Saint-Charles in Bosseval, Vrigne-aux-Bois. It has been registered as a protected object since 5 March 1973. This distinguishes two different aspects of the cultural heritage: the construction history and architecture of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the protected painting at its stated location.
Another point of reference in industrial history
The Jardinier-Hivert factory adds another business to the history of local industry. Émile Hivert founded it around 1848, and it specialised in nail production. This date marks a different point of reference from the completion of the Forge Gendarme in 1825: here, it is the founding of a factory specialising in nails; there, the completion of a complex with workers’ housing and ponds. This offers a choice between two industrial histories with different dates, rather than combining both sites into a single business.
