The Saint-Martin Church, cycling and walking routes, and the mining heritage of Montbelleux offer several concrete starting points for planning a trip to Luitré. You can focus on historic architectural styles, a particular route, or a guided tour. The practical difference is this: the blue cycling route is 24.4 kilometres long, the Circuit du chevalier Roland links Luitré and Dompierre, and guided tours of the La Mine de Montbelleux mining site can be booked through the 3M Montbelleux association.

Church architecture and historic crosses

Saint-Martin Church has a Latin cross floor plan, a bell tower with a porch, and a polygonal chancel. In a Latin cross floor plan, the nave and transept form the shape of a cross; a polygonal chancel ends in several sides. These terms therefore describe different parts of the church: one refers to the floor plan, the other to the shape of the chancel.

The church tower dates from the 12th century and has been restored and altered several times, including in 1701 and 1850. Its medieval origins and later interventions are part of the same building history; the two dates pinpoint specific changes over time.

The calvary in Luitré cemetery dates from the 16th century. The granite cross at Bas-Bourg stands on the road to Fougères; its shaft and sloping arms indicate that it dates from the 16th or 17th century. Together with the church, these represent different forms of religious architecture and remembrance: a church, a calvary, and a wayside cross.

Cycling, walking and waterside routes

The 24.4-kilometre blue cycling route can start in the centre of Luitré. There is a carpool and motorhome parking area on Route de Fougères. The Circuit du chevalier Roland links Luitré with Dompierre and can also be started in Luitré. The two routes have different points of focus: the cycling route has a specified length, while the circular route offers a named link between the towns.

The Etang des Rochers in Luitré is open to everyone. You can walk or jog along its landscaped, planted banks. A permit is required for fishing at the pond; it is sold at the Welcome's Bar. As local maintenance may change, check the condition of the waterside facilities before your visit. If you are planning to fish, also check in advance whether the permit is currently available at the Welcome's Bar.

Montbelleux: industrial heritage and guided tours

The headframe of the Montbelleux mine stands on the hilltop and is visible from several kilometres away. Its location and far-reaching visibility give the mining heritage a distinctive place in the landscape.

You can book guided tours of the La Mine de Montbelleux mining site through the 3M Montbelleux association. Groups are welcome, including walking groups and school classes. If you are planning a visit, arrange your booking with the association before you travel.

Saut-Roland: rocky landscapes and climbing

Saut-Roland is a 40-hectare Espace Naturel Sensible (sensitive natural area) owned by the Ille-et-Vilaine Department. Quartz cliffs and rocky landscapes shape the area along the Saint-Blaise River. The Saut-Roland rock offers 96 climbing routes. Its distinctive rock formations and climbing opportunities complement the historic buildings and routes for cycling and walking. Conditions on the climbing routes may change; check the latest information before planning to climb.
