Saugues offers a range of ways to spend your stay: a cultural walking trail, a museum with an immersive presentation, historic buildings and hikes. There are also insights into wool processing, markets and music. Depending on your interests, you can focus on history, crafts or the landscape without trying to fit every theme into a set programme.
History on a walking trail and through a series of scenes
The Parcours d’interprétation presents the history and heritage of Saugues on a cultural walking trail, from historical, biographical and heritage-conservation perspectives. The trail therefore encompasses both the history of the town and personal stories, as well as the approach to its built heritage. It is a good starting point for exploring Saugues from a range of perspectives.
The Musée Fantastique de la Bête du Gévaudan is devoted to the story of the Beast of Gévaudan. The tour comprises 22 scenes; the museum’s presentation may change. The subject is thus conveyed through a sequence of scenes, while the cultural walking trail offers a broader look at history, biographies and heritage conservation.
Architectural history and military heritage
The Tour des Anglais is a 23-metre-high military structure with two floors and a terrace. Three culverins are displayed on the terrace, dating from 1575 and associated with the Wars of Religion. The display of the guns may change for conservation reasons.
The Église Saint-Médard, a former collegiate church, also combines a range of architectural features: the lower section of the bell tower is Romanesque, and remnants of the original Romanesque structure have been preserved. It also features Gothic vaulting and classical architecture. The Chapelle des Pénitents adds a clearly dated chapter to this architectural history: the Brotherhood of the White Penitents built it in 1681, and a sacristy was added in 1783. It is one of the few penitents’ chapels in the département to have survived.
Wool processing, markets and farm-gate sales
The Lainerie du Gévaudan presents the history of wool processing in the Pays de Saugues. Self-guided visits are available, as are guided tours, which require advance booking. Introductory courses and workshops on felting or weaving are also offered on request; availability may change. This offers a chance to explore the history of the craft and work with the materials, with tours and workshops providing different ways to visit.
The Michel-Malige market has two different weekly specialities: a calf market on Mondays and a sheep market on Fridays. As market days may change, check them before travelling. Those interested in regional products can buy traditional pork charcuterie and sheep meat directly from the farm at EARL du Trouquet. Call ahead before visiting.
Music and religious tradition
The Festival en Gévaudan takes place in Saugues and features Celtic and other music. An August 2026 municipal report cites 19 editions and more than 10,000 festival-goers each year; the number of editions and visitors may change. One religious tradition is the Passion on Maundy Thursday: the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs de Saugues continues the traditional procession on that day. The festival and procession therefore offer different cultural events, each of which can be considered separately when planning your dates.
Hiking: route profile and landscape
The PR086 Les trois tours is a challenging 21.5-kilometre hiking route that starts and ends in Saugues. Its length and difficulty rating are useful points of reference for planning a day out. As route details may change due to trail maintenance, check the current route before setting off.
A hike starting in Saugues leads through the Margeride. The heathland is characterised by granite boulders and peat bogs with dwarf birches. These landscape features give the hike a different focus from the historic buildings and convey what makes the scenery distinctive along the way.
