Half-timbered houses in the historic center, a medieval tower on a rocky outcrop and a walk by the stream show Blesle from different perspectives. You can focus on architectural history or scenic walks according to your own interests: those interested in historic buildings will find traces of different eras, while those who enjoy being outdoors can focus on the Voireuze and views of the town.

Architectural history in the townscape

The Maison du Bailliage was built in 1567 to house Blesle’s seigneurial justice after the castle had fallen into disrepair. The doors and windows have lava-stone surrounds, and the turret is topped with a conical roof made of gneiss slabs. On December 12, 2003, the Maison du Bailliage was listed as a Monument historique. This building thus brings together a specific historical function, distinctive materials and a clearly visible architectural detail.

The Château du Bos represents a different sequence in time: it was built in the 17th century beside the ruins of a medieval castle, and an additional building was added in the 18th century. The complex includes a medieval tower and original interior features, including fireplaces, wood paneling and painted lintels. The ruins, the surviving tower and later additions represent different layers of architectural history; the interior features mentioned also give an impression of the details that belong to the complex.

The historic center also tells the story of Blesle’s past: numerous half-timbered houses bear witness to its once-important trading activity. The Tour des Mercœur, also known as the Tour aux vingt angles, is a medieval tower. Its second name refers to the complex design of its floor plan. Together with the Maison du Bailliage and the Château du Bos, it offers another distinct perspective on historic architecture.

Chapels, views and walking paths

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Chaigne was built in 1638 by residents of Blesle, with the support of Abbess Suzanne de Villeneuve, in honor of the Virgin Mary. It lies outside the town center, on the right bank of the Voireuze stream, next to the cemetery. Its surroundings make for a peaceful walk along the water. Those who would like to combine a visit to the chapel with time by the stream will find a different focus here from the towers and historic buildings.

The Tour du Massadou is a medieval defensive and watchtower on a rocky outcrop west of Blesle. It was built in the 13th century for defense and surveillance. The path up is steep and leads to a remarkable viewpoint. Take the incline into account when planning: this route calls for a different assessment from the walk along the Voireuze, which is described as peaceful.

If you would rather enjoy views of Blesle on a circular route, consider the PR507 Le Montignat, which offers panoramic views of the town. Trail conditions can change, so check the current situation before setting out. This lets you distinguish the scenic focus from the steep route to the Tour du Massadou without assigning an unsupported walking time or difficulty level to either.

Museum and digital tours

The Musée de la Coiffe et du costume traditionnel is housed in a former hospital dating from the 16th century. Its collection comprises more than 700 authentic pieces relating to ceremonial and everyday bonnets. Two rooms on the ground floor are free to enter and open to the public; check this visitor option before your trip. The museum visit thus offers a thematic counterpoint to the towers and buildings: here, the focus is on bonnets and the different occasions for which they were worn.

There is also an audio tour for exploring Blesle, designed for people with visual impairments and usable by everyone. The virtual tour includes an adult route and a children’s route, with a small game at each point of interest. The routes use geolocation alerts and offer 360-degree views at these locations. The virtual tour can be downloaded free of charge from Google Play or the App Store; check current availability before using it.

These options differ in format: the audio tour is usable by everyone, while the virtual tour offers different route formats and views at points of interest. You can therefore choose the way of discovering Blesle’s history that best suits you.
