Saint Beauzire brings together two interests: Romanesque church art and château history, as well as protected landscapes and short hiking trails. Its buildings represent different historical periods; the Natura 2000 site complements the cultural focus with a view over the valley and named habitats. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider whether you would primarily like to discover Saint Beauzire through its architecture or its nature.
Church: Romanesque architecture and paintings
The church of Saint-Beauzire is an example of Auvergnat Romanesque architecture; its apse is considered characteristic. The church also has 19th-century wall paintings inspired by medieval paintings. This brings Romanesque forms and later pictorial art together in one building: the wall paintings are works of the 19th century, not medieval features. By decree of 3 June 1957, the apse, choir and transept were partly designated as historic monuments.
Châteaux from different centuries
The Château fort de Bosbomparent was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its architecture includes a main residential building, a stair tower adjoining the courtyard and a large corner tower. Private guided tours of the château are available on request. Check availability with the owner before your visit, and plan a tour only after it has been confirmed.
The Château de Lespinasse was built in the 12th century on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa called Spinatia and is part of the Route des Châteaux d'Auvergne. This makes it older than the Château fort de Bosbomparent. Comparing their ages helps place the two châteaux in context without conflating their distinct building histories.
The privately owned Château de la Chomette dates from the 19th century. It extends the historical timeline with a more recent château; take its private status into account when planning your visit.
Protected landscapes and hiking trails
The Saint Beauzire Natura 2000 site covers 4.5 hectares and lies within the grounds of the Château de Lespinasse. It offers a view over the Vendage Valley. The site includes chestnut trees, hay meadows and wetlands. The valley view and these different habitats provide tangible points of interest for exploring nature locally.
Saint-Beauzire has two short hiking trails awarded the Respirando label. The PR427 Le Coudert du Marquis trail passes through fields and alongside a woodland. Check trail conditions locally before planning a hike.
Choose Saint Beauzire to suit your interests
For culture enthusiasts, different historical periods take centre stage: the Romanesque church with its later, medieval-inspired paintings, and châteaux dating from the 12th to the 19th century. Those more interested in landscapes and hiking will find specific nature-related points of interest in the Natura 2000 site and the trails described here.
