The Balade de l'histoire de la Terre brings the history of the Earth to life on a 4.6-kilometre educational trail. Each metre represents one million years, while the trail also explores local geology. This scale gives the route its own distinctive theme. In Saint-Didier-en-Velay, there is also architectural history, hiking trails and insights into the processing of plants. You can choose the focus of your stay according to what interests you most.

Architectural history and craft traditions

The Eglise Saint-Didier brings together several building phases: its original construction phase is dated to 1159–1164. Parts of the nave date from the 12th century, while others date from the 14th century. The bell tower also contains a seigneurial chapel from the 14th century. The church has been listed as a French Monument historique since 15 June 1954. The different dates show that the building does not belong to just one century.

Architectural details outside the church also point to the history of the town. The former weavers' houses preserve evidence of Saint-Didier-en-Velay's passementerie tradition. The vaulted Porte de la Toune leads to the Grande Place. Together, these examples offer different ways to explore local history: the church's building phases, the former weaving trade and a gate with a clearly named destination.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The PR272 Le circuit du Crouzet is an 11.6-kilometre, moderately difficult circular hiking trail in Saint-Didier-en-Velay. It connects the medieval town centre with the workers' settlement of Crouzet, considered a centre of paper production. This route therefore focuses on both the town centre and the history of paper production. It is a longer option than the 4.6-kilometre Balade de l'histoire de la Terre; the two trails also differ in theme and in the type of route specified.

The PR268 Le circuit du Crapaud has a different focus. At the start, the circular trail crosses the Semène on a small 12th-century bridge. For much of its length, it follows the river through woods and fields. The bridge is a specific historical feature at the beginning of the route; the rest of the trail is shaped by the landscape along the Semène. No walking time is provided for this trail, so its duration cannot be inferred from the information given.

For mountain biking, La Pleyne des Mâts is designated as a circular route in Saint-Didier-en-Velay. Both the start and finish are in the town. This makes it a different activity from the two hiking routes. When planning your choice, you can consider separately the PR272's distance and difficulty, the PR268's connection to the river and surrounding landscape, and La Pleyne des Mâts's designation as a mountain-bike route.

Geology trail and guided tours

The Balade de l'histoire de la Terre can also be planned around its tour schedule: guided tours are offered from June to October on the first Sunday of each month. Booking is compulsory. Check the specific dates and booking requirements before travelling. This means the guided tour is tied to certain Sundays; the other details about the educational trail remain unchanged, including its length, its focus on the history of the Earth, and the interpretation of each metre as one million years.

When choosing between the trails, their distances offer a direct comparison, but do not in themselves indicate walking times. The Balade de l'histoire de la Terre covers 4.6 kilometres and focuses on the history of the Earth and local geology; the moderately difficult PR272 is 11.6 kilometres long and forms a circular route between the medieval town centre and Crouzet. The PR268, meanwhile, stands out for the small bridge at the start and its route along the Semène. La Pleyne des Mâts offers a separate circular option for mountain biking.

Plant products and recurring events

At La Brasserie des Plantes, visitors can learn how artisanal liqueurs are made and make their own liqueur in workshops. The brewery also produces artisanal liqueurs and infusions from little-known plants. The visitor experience and product range go hand in hand here: you can learn about the production process as well as discover the products mentioned.

La Boria des Gotas processes and sells organically certified infusions, food supplements, jams and kitchen aids through regional direct sales. The products are said to be 100 per cent from Saint-Didier-en-Velay. This adds further product categories to the picture of local plant processing, without equating them with the brewery's liqueur workshops.

The Saint-Didier-en-Velay Carnival is an annual event held on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year. The themes mentioned offer different points of interest for planning: architectural history and the weaving tradition, the history of the Earth, trails on foot or by mountain bike, and plant processing.
