In Lapte, two very different discoveries come together: the Église Saint-Jean, with its eventful building history and unusual Foucault pendulum, and the leisure activities at Lac de Lavalette. There is also the signposted PR523 hike, whose length and approximate walking time are known. This lets you choose between architecture, science, activities on the water and a specific walking loop.

Église Saint-Jean: Building history and pendulum

The Église Saint-Jean de Lapte was built between 1888 and 1896 to plans by the architect Ernest Tracol. It replaced a medieval castle chapel dating from the 12th century. The bell tower is also distinctive: at 51 metres, it is the tallest in the Haute-Loire département. The church thus brings together several historical and architectural points of interest in one place—from its medieval predecessor to a church built in the late 19th century.

Inside is a Foucault pendulum that makes the Earth's rotation visible. It is 17 metres high and weighs just under 80 kilograms. Visits are possible by prior reservation; check the seasonal conditions that apply to your visit date in advance. The pendulum adds a distinct point of interest to the building's history: here, a scientific phenomenon is made tangible through a specific object inside the church.

Leisure and water at Lac de Lavalette

Lac de Lavalette lies between Lapte and Saint-Jeures. Its surface area is 220 hectares, and it has been awarded the “Aire Respirando” designation. At the Base de loisirs du lac de Lavalette in Lapte, you will find an outdoor playground with leisure and sports facilities. Individual facilities may change over time. The site also includes an arboretum.

Free supervised swimming is available at the lake in July and August. Before your trip, check whether lifeguard supervision is in place at the time of your visit. Activities on the water include catamaran sailing, pedal boating, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and rides in an electric boat. The options range from swimming to various forms of water sports.

The Espace Loisirs Orientation at the base features four orienteering courses through forests and along the shores of the largest lake in the Haute-Loire. The lake also has facilities for bicycles and mountain bikes, as well as opportunities for hiking, trail running, running and fishing. Orienteering, cycling, walking trails and water sports offer different areas of focus; you can choose activities to suit your interests without needing to follow a shared route.

PR523: a marked loop through Lapte

The easy PR523 Le balcon du Velay trail is a marked circular walk that starts at Lapte town hall. It is 5.8 kilometres long, with an approximate walking time of 1 hour 30 minutes. The route includes 88 metres of descent and 87 metres of ascent. It passes below the church before leaving the village to the north.

If you are looking for a walk with a clearly stated distance and walking time, you can use these figures to plan your time. PR523 offers a different way to discover Lapte from visiting the church or enjoying activities at the lake: it is a set loop with a specified route and elevation gain and loss. By contrast, the base at the lake offers several different leisure activities rather than focusing on a single walking route.
