Saint-Pierre-du-Champ combines hikes rated as challenging with Romanesque architecture, traces of the Via Bolène and a site in Nolhac created specifically for stargazing. The landscape of the Gorges de l’Arzon, shaped by granite, adds to the appeal. There are several distinct ways to choose between outdoor activity, architecture and observing nature: two PR routes with stated difficulty ratings, a church with several building phases, and a dedicated site for viewing the sky.

Hiking: Compare distance and difficulty

Two PR hikes offer a direct comparison in terms of distance and difficulty. The PR443 “Le plateau de Saint-Pierre” is rated difficult, is 17.3 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 4 hours and 45 minutes. The PR444 “L’Arzon” is also rated difficult, covers 14.6 kilometres and starts and ends in Saint-Pierre-du-Champ. It is therefore 2.7 kilometres shorter, but is not rated as an easier alternative. You can factor the stated duration for the PR443 into your plans; also check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change. The “Les villages du plateau” route also passes through Saint-Pierre-du-Champ.

Nature, land art and stargazing

The Gorges de l’Arzon form a rugged, wild landscape shaped by granite. A site for stargazing has been created in Nolhac, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-du-Champ. It offers the chance both to observe the sky and to experience the protected natural environment of the Gorges de l’Arzon. Two aspects of nature therefore come together at the viewing site: the landscape and the starry sky.

The Sentier des Légendes features six land art works along its route. Artistic design is a distinctive feature of this trail, setting it apart in character from the PR hikes, which can be compared by distance and stated difficulty. Alongside the landscape and stargazing, visitors can therefore also enjoy art along a trail.

Romanesque church and historical traces

The Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre-du-Champ can be visited individually and independently at any time, free of charge. Check visitor information before your trip, as access may change.

The church dates from the 11th century and was extensively remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries. Another architectural feature is its polychrome Romanesque portal. Its date, later alterations and portal each offer a different starting point for exploring the church’s architectural history and design.

Another historical point of interest is the ruins of Château d’Arzon. They stand on a promontory overlooking the Arzon. Traces of the Via Bolène can also be found in Saint-Pierre-du-Champ. The area’s historical points of interest therefore range from the church’s architectural history to castle ruins in a striking location and traces of a historic route.
