Chanteuges brings together two distinct areas to explore: Romanesque heritage and nature around La Gravière. The Benedictine abbey stands on a basalt spur at an altitude of 540 metres; below it lie the village and its cobbled streets. This arrangement gives the place a striking relationship between elevation and settlement: the abbey forms the upper focal point, while the village lies below.

Romanesque heritage in Chanteuges

Another cultural highlight is the Church of Saint-Marcellin, dedicated to Saint Marcellin and dating from the 12th century. In the Romanesque church, the permanent exhibition “Paroles de pierres” presents sculptures from the capitals. They feature vegetal, figurative and narrative motifs. Capitals are the upper parts of columns; the three groups of motifs offer different perspectives on the visual language depicted: plant ornament, figures and narrative imagery. In this way, the period of construction, Romanesque architecture and sculpture come together as related but distinct themes.

Nature and leisure at La Gravière

At La Gravière, the focus shifts from architecture to landscape and leisure. The area is open to the public and includes a fitness trail, ponds popular with anglers, beaches along the Allier and a walking path. These features offer different ways to spend time outdoors: a lap on the trail, time at the ponds or by the water, and a walk. La Gravière is also a small ZNIEFF (natural area of ecological, faunal and floral interest) and includes a floodplain terrace of the Allier. The leisure area and nature designation therefore refer to the same place. As local water restrictions may change, check the current notices on site.

Nature conservation is also among the local themes. Chanteuges is home to the Conservatoire national du saumon sauvage (National Centre for the Conservation of Wild Salmon). It contributes to salmon conservation in the Loire-Allier basin and supplies juvenile fish in Europe for reintroduction or for rearing in fish farms. In this way, its institutional conservation mission complements the landscape-related themes of the Allier with a focus on salmon protection.

Plan hikes and events

For hikers, there is one clearly described option: PR223 La source de Pourcheresse is an easy 3.6-kilometre circular hike that starts in Chanteuges. Its length, grading and circular route provide different reference points when deciding how to fit a hike into your stay: how far it goes, its stated level of difficulty and where it starts. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as conditions on hiking routes can change. Separately, the La Gravière nature campsite is located on two long-distance trails: the GR 470 Sources et Gorges de l’Allier and the GR Robe de Bure et Cottes de Mailles. Together, these details show two different ways to orient yourself for hiking: a measured circular route and a campsite located on long-distance trails.

The events calendar also offers two clear times of year. The Fête de la pêche (Fishing Festival) takes place annually in early June at La Gravière; dates and programme may change. The Foire de Mai (May Fair) is held every year in May and brings together plant stalls, food, and artistic and handmade goods. Individual exhibitors and activities at the fair may vary. The events therefore differ both in their place in the annual calendar and in the activities described. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, check the exact date and programme in advance.
