The Pont Vieux crosses the Loire at a bend in the river that is classified for its geological features and environment. Lavoûte-sur-Loire combines this distinctive connection to the river with Romanesque heritage, the Château de Lavoûte-Polignac and the PR225 Les Bois Noirs circular trail. When choosing where to visit, you can therefore give different weight to culture, river scenery and nature walks.

Buildings and historical landmarks

The Eglise Romane de Lavoute-sur-Loire is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It houses a large wooden Christ, a Romanesque altar and a processional cross. The construction date and furnishings provide two specific points of interest: the date places the building in its historical period, while the three named items offer a closer look at its furnishings.

The Château de Lavoûte-Polignac has overlooked the Loire for more than 1,000 years. In contrast to the church, the château represents a different historical timescale: a building from the 12th century stands alongside a presence above the river spanning more than a millennium. The Pont Vieux adds a distinct connection to the landscape—the river crossing at the classified bend in the Loire.

Circular trail and the natural setting of the Loire gorges

The PR225 Les Bois Noirs circular trail starts and ends in Lavoûte-sur-Loire. It passes along the wooded slopes of the Loire gorges and offers panoramic views of the Château de Lavoûte-Polignac. Along the PR225, the Loire gorges include heathland, pebble or sandy beaches, forests and dry grasslands. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network because it is home to more than 100 bird species.

So the trail takes in more than just woodland: the landscapes described also include open dry areas and beaches. Unlike the single river crossing at the Pont Vieux, the PR225 circular trail passes through several types of natural scenery. Panoramic views of the château add a cultural landmark to the focus on the landscape.

Leisure and getting there

The Centre Aqua Passion in Lavoûte-sur-Loire offers a swimming pool, a sports hall, a wellness area and a green beach area. This caters to different leisure interests, from sports and swimming to wellness. As facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit. The Centre Aqua Passion’s green beach area should be distinguished from the pebble or sandy beaches of the Loire gorges: the former is part of the leisure facility, while the latter are landscape features along the PR225. These similarly named features therefore relate to two different aspects of trip planning.

Lavoûte-sur-Loire is one of the villages served by the TER-SNCF railway line between Saint-Étienne and Le Puy-en-Velay. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable before your trip.
