Autrac offers several ways to enjoy a stay: the Église Saint-Julien brings together architectural elements from several periods, two different dates shape the building history of Château de Montmoirat, and the Bave Valley is a protected natural area. A circular walking route and the activities offered by Flâneries d'Autrac complement these cultural and landscape highlights with things to do. You can plan your trip around whichever interests you most.

Romanesque, Gothic and classical architectural elements

The Église Saint-Julien has a Romanesque apse dating from the 12th century. Gothic side chapels and a square tower above the crossing expanded and altered the building; the south portal dates from the classical period. The choir has eleven carved corbels supporting a cornice decorated with an egg-and-dart pattern. An apse is the end section of the choir; the crossing is where the nave and transept intersect. Corbels are projecting supports, and the egg-and-dart pattern repeats egg-shaped motifs along the cornice. This makes it possible to understand the architecture both by its components and by its periods, rather than assigning every detail to a single construction date.

Château de Montmoirat: location and building history

The site of Château de Montmoirat was already occupied in the 13th century; construction of the present château began in 1635. These dates refer to two different points in time: the 13th century describes the history of the site, while 1635 marks the start of the present building. By decree of 30 September 1991, the château and its outbuildings, the barn with stable, the sheepfold and the adjoining farm buildings were listed as a historic monument. The listing therefore covers the château and the specified buildings as protected property.

The Bave Valley and the possibility of spotting wildlife

The Bave Valley runs through the commune of Autrac and is now a protected natural area. With a little luck, you may spot otters there. A sighting is therefore possible, but not a reliably scheduled activity. The valley adds a natural highlight alongside the buildings and their history.

Circular walk and activities

The PR508 Autour de Montfouat circular walk is 15.2 km long. This distance gives you a practical starting point for planning your day; you can decide how much time to allow based on your own pace.

Flâneries d'Autrac offers donkey walks with a harnessed donkey, a donkey carrying panniers, or a donkey led by hand. The three options differ in how the donkey is involved in the walk. The offering also includes a visit to a mini-farm with miniature animals. If you would like to include one of these activities in your trip, check the operating arrangements before you travel.

If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Autrac, first consider whether you would rather focus on architectural history, the landscape or one of the activities mentioned.
