Saint-Privat-d'Allier offers two distinct route contexts for planning your trip: the GR65 begins its hiking stage to Saugues here; the Via Allier à vélo arrives here from Prades on Stage 15 and continues to Pont-d'Alleyras on Stage 16. There are also buildings from different historical periods. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to decide on your main focus first: do you want to centre your stay on a particular stage, or combine hiking or cycling with cultural heritage?

Hiking the GR65

The GR65 hiking stage starts in Saint-Privat-d'Allier and ends in Saugues. This clearly identifies the starting and finishing points for your itinerary. In the centre of Saint-Privat-d'Allier, the GR65 leaves the D589 and then follows an uphill road. As far as Rochegude, it continues along a path that alternately runs above and below the road. The descriptions therefore distinguish between the section through the village and the route beyond it: in the centre, the uphill road is the key reference point; later, it is the path's changing position relative to the road.

Chapel, château and church

The Chapelle Saint-Jacques-de-Rochegude is in Rochegude, Saint-Privat-d'Allier. It is a Romanesque chapel dating from the 12th century and preserves traces of paintings that apparently date from the 17th century. These two dates refer to different aspects: the chapel's period and the tentatively dated paintings. Since 1 October 1974, the chapel has been listed as a historic monument by decree.

The Château de Mercoeur was built by the Mercoeur family in the 13th century as a fortress on elevated ground. The keep also had a specific function within the complex: it was built to provide a view of the two castles of Saint-Privat and Saint-Didier d'Allier. This historic visual connection gives the building a different narrative dimension from its origins as a fortress. The Église Saint-Privat has also been listed as a historic monument by decree, since 7 January 1926. In both cases, the dates refer to when the buildings were listed, not when they were built.

Cycling the Via Allier à vélo

Stages 15 and 16 run in different directions: Stage 15 goes from Prades to Saint-Privat-d'Allier, and Stage 16 continues from there to Pont-d'Alleyras. The village is therefore the destination for one stage and the starting point for the next. When planning your route, you can use these two roles to guide your choice.

The Allier gorges and descents shape the route of Stage 16. The route runs above a narrow, hard-to-reach section of the gorges and then descends towards the river. It follows the D40 and includes technically challenging descents that require attention and confident bike handling. This makes the cycling stage quite different from the GR65: here, the road route and riding technique are part of the decision, while for hiking, the path to Rochegude and the endpoint at Saugues are the key reference points. Before setting out, check current trail, road and weather conditions.

You can base your choice of stay on a simple question: are you planning a hiking stage, a cycling stage, or would you like to give special attention to the historic buildings? The routes and buildings mentioned offer different focuses, without requiring you to fit them all into a single day's itinerary.
