Those interested in architectural history and outdoor activities will find several distinct points of interest in Lempdes Sur Allagnon. The market hall, Église Saint-Géraud and Grand Pont showcase specific historical and architectural details. Mills and paths along the Béal shape the visitor experience, alongside opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and climbing. This makes it easy to choose whether to focus on buildings, a circular walk or climbing.

Market Hall, Church and Bridge

The market hall is semicircular in shape. Its columns are of different designs, and the roof is reminiscent of the “Emperor’s hat.” The hall is also protected by its listing as a Monument historique, dated 2 May 1956.

The Église Saint-Géraud brings together a documented historical record and surviving medieval architectural features: in 1078, the church was handed over to the Prior of Sauxilanges. The structure and some capitals of the medieval church have survived. The apse and transept date from the late 11th to the 12th century. The layout includes two bays with groin vaults and a third bay beneath a dome.

The Grand Pont offers a different period and style. Built in 1772, the single-arch bridge has a span of 30 metres.

Following the Béal and its mills

Between Lempdes and Beaulieu, the Béal diverts some of the Allagnon’s water over a distance of almost seven kilometres. A path starting at Place du Bosquet runs along the Béal and makes it possible to visit three mills in the village centre. These include a former oil mill, where a well-preserved waterwheel can be seen. The path thus connects the watercourse with several mills, rather than focusing on a single building.

A digital Béal route starts at the Salle polyvalente and leads through the village to its mills. It therefore has a different starting point from the path from Place du Bosquet. Hiking trails, a mountain-biking route and discovery trails also offer ways to follow the Béal. If you want to include the watercourse in your plans, you can choose between different ways of exploring it.

Hiking and cycling, with different points of interest

PR418 Le Béal is a moderately difficult, 11.9-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts in Lempdes Sur Allagnon. The route runs along the Béal and its old mills, then follows the Allagnon. Check route conditions before setting off.

PR417 Les Amouroux focuses on a different landscape. The trail lies above the Limagne and offers views over the agricultural areas of the Brivadois and Lembron, as well as the surrounding Cézallier and Livradois plateaus. By comparison, PR418 is a measured circular hike along the water and old mills; PR417 is distinguished by its described landscape views. The two routes can therefore be chosen according to different interests, without assuming a length or difficulty level for PR417.

Lempdes Sur Allagnon is also the starting point for four mountain-biking circuits in the “du Pays d’Auzon aux sources de l’Auvergne” VTT-FFC area. This adds cycling trips to the selection without equating them with the hiking routes. As conditions on individual routes may change, it is recommended that you check them before setting off.

Climbing at Rocher de l’Allagnon

The Le Rocher de l’Allagnon climbing area has 20 routes across all grades, from 3A to 6B. The routes are between seven and a maximum of 18 metres high. There are also shaded picnic tables at the Rocher. The climbing area is 300 metres from the car park at the Salle polyvalente and next to the campsite. If you are planning a climbing visit, check conditions and access before setting out.
