The first stage of the six-day Retrouvance Haute-vallée de la Loire is in Le Brignon; at the same time, the Greenway extends to the border with Costaros. There is also the Romanesque Église Saint-Martin du Brignon. This gives you different options to consider when planning your trip: a multi-day hike, hiking or cycling along a former railway line, nature in the surrounding area, and architecture in the village.
Greenway and Retrouvance: two different hiking plans
The Greenway follows a former railway line and is suitable for hiking and cycling, including on hybrid and mountain bikes. Its section extends to the border between Le Brignon and Costaros. The route has an average gradient of about 2 percent and rises from 650 to 1,070 metres in elevation. These figures give you an idea of the elevation profile; for specific planning, you should also consult up-to-date route information.
The Retrouvance Haute-vallée de la Loire is a different proposition: the hike runs from Coubon to Mont Gerbier de Joncs and lasts six days and five nights. Le Brignon is the location of the first stage. If you are choosing between a trip on the Greenway and this multi-day route, the main consideration is the time commitment: plan for a multi-day hiking trip for the Retrouvance rather than a single outing.
Groups of 10 to 12 hikers are accompanied by mountain guides on the Retrouvance. Logistics staff transport the luggage and meet the group at each stage. These details give you a clearer picture of how the tour works; check availability before making specific plans.
Nature destinations around Le Brignon
Visitor trails in the Le Brignon area lead to the Cascade de la Beaume; Le Brignon is one of several starting points. The waterfall is 27 metres high and is located in the Agizoux forest. This makes the Cascade a nature destination in its own right, separate from the Greenway and the multi-day Retrouvance. The visitor trails lead to the waterfall, while Le Brignon is just one of several stated starting points.
You can also visit the Ferme de la seconde chance in Le Brignon. About forty animals live there, most of which were previously abandoned. A visit offers a different way to experience the village than hiking trails or architecture. As visitor arrangements may change, it is best to check the details of your visit in advance.
Romanesque church with a Gothic porch
The Église Saint-Martin du Brignon is Romanesque. Its porch has Gothic features because it was built later, in the 14th century. The porch thus adds another architectural dimension to the Romanesque classification, without reducing the church to a single building phase. The Église Saint-Martin in Le Brignon was listed in its entirety as a historic monument on 30 October 1987.
