Church, hamlets and châteaux
The Église Saint-Étienne brings together several clearly distinguishable historical details. It was built in 1242 in a style described as more or less Romanesque. Its early construction period is also reflected in its wrought-iron door, studded with nails. The church also houses a protected baptismal font carved from granite, dating from between the 13th and 17th centuries. The door points to the early construction period, while the date range for the baptismal font spans two centuries. The building style, materials and furnishings thus stand alongside one another as distinct features. For anyone interested in architecture, the church offers specific details about the door and baptismal font in addition to its stylistic features. The wrought-iron door and stone font draw the eye from the building’s design to two different items of its furnishings.
The hamlets of La Devèze and Senergues are also distinct historical landmarks. La Devèze is a hamlet with a château near Saint-Étienne-de-Maurs and the King’s Road. Pierre Freyre was lord of La Devèze in 1579. The Château de la Devèze dates from the 16th century and has been converted into an elegant hotel with a full range of amenities. If you are considering staying here, check current availability before making plans. Senergues is also a hamlet with an attractive château. N.-Louis de Montarnal was born at the Château de Senergues in 1764. The two hamlets offer different historical connections: La Devèze through Pierre Freyre’s lordship in 1579 and the château’s conversion into a hotel; Senergues through the birth of N.-Louis de Montarnal in 1764.
Cycling and nature trails
The Côte des Estresses is a signposted 7-kilometre cycling route. It starts at Nivolis in Saint-Étienne-de-Maurs and continues to Saint-Julien-de-Toursac. Check the signage and route conditions again before setting out. Its named start and end points make the route easy to picture as a cycling leg and provide a concrete framework for planning.
The Sentier nature en Châtaigneraie offers a different focus. It starts at the Moulin de Senergues on the banks of the Rance, 500 metres beyond the church. Its information boards introduce around 120 plants. This sets it apart from the Côte des Estresses through its botanical theme: the cycling route focuses on the route and its endpoints, while the nature trail focuses on the plants presented on its boards. In other words, one route is about cycling from start to finish, while the other offers botanical information along the trail. Check access and trail conditions again before your visit.
