Trémouille is in Haut Cantal, in the Artense and the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne. There are different themes to explore during a stay: paths around Lac du Tact and Lac du Taurons invite you to take in the scenery, while Lac de Lastioulles offers swimming and other water activities. The Gothic Église Saint-Martin adds a cultural highlight. Which of these aspects you focus on will shape the character of your trip.
Lakes, paths and activities on the water
Lac du Tact is an artificial lake covering 23 hectares. It was created by flooding a former peat bog, so its origins differ from those of a natural body of water. A themed circular path by the lake passes a wildlife observation point and picnic tables. The path therefore offers convenient stopping points for a walk: you can linger at the observation point or take a break at the tables.
Lac de Lastioulles lies at an altitude of 800 metres and covers 125 hectares. It is suitable for swimming and fishing. In summer, Plage de Lastioulles adds swimming, sailing and canoeing to these options. The beach has held the Pavillon Bleu label since 2015; check before your trip whether it is still awarded. For people with reduced mobility, the beach may provide step-free access and a Tiralo beach wheelchair. Confirm that these facilities will be available before your visit.
Lac naturel de La Crégut has a different character: it is the largest natural lake of glacial origin in the Massif Central and covers nearly 37 hectares. Swimming is prohibited there. This distinction matters when planning a swim: swimming is possible at Lac de Lastioulles, but not at La Crégut. La Crégut’s natural origins also differ from those of the artificial Lac du Tact.
An easy walking path runs around Lac du Taurons, offering views of the scenery. This is another route, focused on circling the lake and enjoying the landscape. At Lac du Tact, by contrast, the highlights are the themed circular path, the wildlife observation point and the picnic tables. These differences can help you choose a walk based on what you would most like to do.
Église Saint-Martin and its bell wheel
Église Saint-Martin is a Gothic church dating from the 15th century, and it was listed as a historic monument in 1980. Its architecture and heritage status give a visit a different focus from the lakes: here, the emphasis is on architectural history and a distinctive feature of the church’s furnishings.
The approximately 3.5-metre-high bell wheel, Roue de Saint Martin, hangs in the choir. It was turned at weddings and baptisms. Its location, size and ceremonial use make the wheel a striking detail of the church.
The church can be visited free of charge. You can get the key from Trémouille town hall. Check the key arrangements again before your visit so you can take this information into account when planning.
Plan your stay around your interests
When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which experiences you would like to shape your stay: summer swimming and watersports at Plage de Lastioulles, a walk at Lac du Tact or Lac du Taurons, or a visit to Église Saint-Martin. If you plan to swim, bear in mind the prohibition at La Crégut and the seasonal options at the beach. This can help you tailor your search for hotels in Trémouille to the experiences that matter to you on your trip.
