Saint-Cernin lies on a hillside at the western edge of the Cantal Volcano. Churches and châteaux tell the story of different eras, while walking trails, a cycling route and the Doire offer other points of interest. This makes it easy to plan a stay that combines architectural history and landscape.

Church and châteaux: architectural styles and history

The Church of Saint-Cernin is a single-nave building made of lava stone. Its south portal and comb-style bell tower are two distinctive architectural details. “Single-nave” describes the basic layout of the church interior, with one main nave; the portal and tower give the exterior further clearly recognisable features.

The Château du Cambon was once a fortress from the Wars of Religion and is now dedicated to Marie-Antoinette. The guided tour includes reception rooms, a chapel, a gallery and French gardens. Its former role as a fortress and its present dedication represent different layers of history. Check visiting arrangements before you travel.

The Château de Faussanges was built in 1815 and opens onto terraced gardens with views over the Doire Valley. At the 14th-century Château de Marzes, a truncated tower and part of a building that was remodelled over the centuries have been preserved. The Château de Ragheaud, meanwhile, dates from the 15th century; its interiors are considered to have remained unchanged since the 18th century. Together, they illustrate different points of interest: a dated building with gardens, preserved and altered features at Marzes, and the interiors of Ragheaud.

Walking and cycling

Saint-Cernin’s cultural discovery trail is accompanied by a leaflet introducing the town’s heritage. It connects the theme of architectural history with an opportunity to explore it further in the town. For a walk with specific distance and time details, the trail to Col de Fontbulin starts in Saint-Cernin: it is 12 km long, has 400 m of elevation gain and takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes. These three figures help you estimate the distance, elevation gain and time required for a day’s walk. The trail is accessible year-round and free of charge.

Another walking option is the Saint-Cernin “Anjoigny” trail, which passes in front of the Château du Cambon. Check the trail markers and access before setting out. The cycling tour through the valleys of the Bertrande and the Doire also passes through Saint-Cernin and by the Tour de Marzes. Alongside the walking trails, the town therefore offers cycling and an equestrian centre as different ways to be active.

The Ecurie de la Doire is an equestrian centre in Saint-Cernin. Check the current arrangements before visiting.

The Doire, hillside setting and views

The Doire flows past Saint-Cernin and is a fast-flowing river; downstream, there are gorges. Saint-Cernin’s hillside setting at the western edge of the Cantal Volcano gives it a distinctive connection to the landscape. The plateau at the Croix de Saint-Pierre offers views of the Monts du Cantal. The river, hillside setting and viewpoint each show a different aspect of the landscape.

Market and planning your visit

From April to October, the weekly market takes place on Fridays in the late afternoon. If you want to include the market in your plans, schedule your visit for this time. Together with the cultural sites and the various ways to explore on foot, by bike or on horseback, the market offers another practical point of reference when choosing your day to visit.
