Le Trou du Diable gives Vitrac a distinctive connection to nature: this jumble of rocks lies on the Rance. Other highlights include the history of its château, an artwork in Saint-Martial church, trompe-l’œil works and a weekly market. This offers several ways to explore the area—through its riverside landscape and trails, heritage or market produce.

Rock Pools and Trails

Over the centuries, swirling water at Le Trou du Diable has formed remarkable gours: stone pools polished by the water. The easy walk to this natural site takes about 15 minutes. Check trail conditions locally before setting out. There are parking spaces and picnic tables nearby; their availability may change.

The Le trou du diable trail near Vitrac is one of the marked walking routes in the Saint-Mamet area; the hiking route starts at Vitrac town hall square. For mountain biking, the Du Gour aux carriérous loop follows numerous wooded, shady sections before reaching the village centre. For planning purposes, you can consider several options: the roughly 15-minute walk to the jumble of rocks, the starting point for a hike at the town hall square, and a cycling route with wooded and shady sections.

Château, Church and Trompe-l’œil

Château de Fargues is part of Vitrac’s historic heritage and has been mentioned since the 13th century as a fortified château and the seat of the Méallet family seigneurie. Saint-Martial church houses a high-altar tabernacle with statues of Saint Louis and Saint Martial dating from the 18th century; in 2001, the object was listed as a protected object. The two dates refer to different aspects: the 18th century dates the statues of Saint Louis and Saint Martial on the high altar, while the 2001 listing designates the entire tabernacle as a protected object.

The trompe-l’œil works in Vitrac offer a different artistic form. They grew out of a collaboration with students in the MIROLURE mural-painting class at Lycée Auguste Perret in Poitiers, which began in the 2000s. The examples differ in date and form: a fortified château, a work of church art and trompe-l’œil works begun later. The heritage therefore offers more than a single historical perspective.

Weekly Market and Trip Planning

Vitrac’s weekly market adds a culinary perspective to its landscape and heritage. It offers vegetables, bread, yoghurt and dessert creams, honey, chestnut cream, as well as goat’s cheese and goat sausages. The selection includes both sweet and savoury products; the availability of individual items may vary. If the market is part of your travel plans, check the date and specific offerings in advance. This lets you include nature, culture and the market in your stay according to your interests.
