The Rocher de Ronesque combines a distinctive geological formation with far-reaching views: the basalt plateau was formed by topographic inversion, and from here you can see the Aveyronnais-Carladez and the Aubrac. Together with the historic buildings and hiking trails, this gives a stay in Cros-De-Ronesque several different points of interest.

Landscape and trails

At the Ronesque site, two information panels help visitors find their bearings while taking in the panorama. Part of the municipal area also lies within the Natura 2000 site “coteaux de Raulhac et Cros de Ronesque”. It was designated on 23 July 2015. This adds a specific connection to protected nature to the landscape, without equating the protected area with the entire municipality.

Woodland also shapes the surroundings: La Ronde des Sécadous runs through the heart of chestnut and oak woods. Another route, the Boucle des Secadous, leads to the hamlet of Escoubiac and its chestnut dryers. These preserved structures are part of the hamlet’s traditional architectural heritage; the walk thus offers a chance to combine hiking with a specific aspect of local heritage.

Two routes with different time requirements

The route information for the Boucle des Secadous lists a distance of 4.3 kilometres, a duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes, and an elevation gain of 120 metres. The route is marked in blue and rated moderate. The Boucle du château de Messilhac is considerably longer, at 15 kilometres and five hours; it is marked in red, rated difficult, and has an elevation gain of 701 metres. The two walks therefore differ clearly in duration, distance, difficulty rating and elevation gain.

The Boucle du château de Messilhac starts at the village square in Cros-De-Ronesque. After crossing the Goul, it follows the RD59 back towards the village. The route information provides an indication of the time and physical effort involved; trail conditions may change. Check them before setting out. For Escoubiac, the Boucle des Secadous is the route that specifically leads to the chestnut dryers.

Architectural history in the village centre and hamlets

The Couderc is in the village centre, where a fair used to be held. You can admire Carladez-style houses around it. Two other houses illustrate different periods of construction: Maison Bory dates from the 19th century; its basement once housed a forge. Maison Morzières dates back to the 17th century. Its described architectural features include a projecting dovecote and its interpretation as a small manor house.

The chestnut dryers in Escoubiac add another aspect of the architectural heritage. Unlike the houses in the village centre, they are associated with a hamlet and can be visited on the Boucle des Secadous. Anyone interested in architectural history can explore several different forms: houses in the centre, a former forge in a basement, and the preserved dryers in the hamlet.

Churches and chapels

The Église Saint-Hilaire dates from the early 15th century and is listed as a Monument historique. Its chapels date from different centuries: the north chapel is from the 15th century and the south chapel from the 17th. The bell tower also has a distinctive form: it consists of the western gable wall, topped by three arcades.

The Saint-Jacques Chapel stands on the Rocher de Ronesque, overlooking the Goul valley and the Carladès. The chapel, dedicated to Saint James, was mentioned as early as the 15th century. It was a priory whose appointment was the responsibility of the chapter of Saint-Géraud d’Aurillac. This is distinct from the present-day Saint-Jacques Church: it was built in 1900, west of the older church, in the Neo-Romanesque style. Together, these buildings show how the town’s religious architecture developed over several centuries.
