A 360-degree panorama of Lot, Aveyron and Cantal provides a striking landscape highlight along Le Chemin des Causses. Montmurat also offers a historical dimension: the village, perched on a hill, stands on the remains of an old fortress, and the Église Sainte-Marie is fully listed as a Monument historique. Those looking for accommodation in Montmurat can therefore choose between a stay focused on hiking and one with a stronger cultural and historical interest.
Panorama and circular hiking trail
Le Chemin des Causses is an 8.3-kilometre circular hiking trail. From the plateau, it offers a 360-degree panorama of Lot, Aveyron and Cantal. The view across three départements gives the panorama a regional scope. The 8.3-kilometre circular route and the viewpoint represent two different planning considerations: distance and the landscape experience.
The panoramic view from the plateau is accessible from the trail’s starting point via the D 345. Weather conditions can affect whether it is suitable for hiking, so take them into account when planning the circular route.
Village history and church
The village of Montmurat stands on a hill and on the remains of an old fortress. According to local tradition, the former fortress had 13 towers; La Garenne was supposedly its parade ground, surrounded by walls and ditches cut into the rock. Two historical perspectives therefore sit side by side: the village’s location on the remains of a fortress and the local tradition of towers and a fortified parade ground.
Since 11 October 2004, the Église Sainte-Marie in Montmurat has been fully listed as a Monument historique. The church contains a series of paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross, as well as anthropomorphic capitals. The full listing applies to the entire church building; the paintings and capitals add specific details of the interior. Anthropomorphic means human-shaped and describes the design of the capitals here.
The architecture of the village streets also shows notable Mediterranean influences. This adds a feature attributed to the village lanes to the picture of the church.
Landscape and plant life
Southern climatic influences shape Montmurat and support an exceptional flora. This includes lily of the valley, boxwood, wild asparagus, grapevines and orchids. The natural setting thus encompasses both the sweeping panoramic view from the plateau and plant life featuring specific named species. On the plateau above the hilltop village are picnic areas equipped with at least picnic tables. Those planning a break outdoors while exploring the landscape can include the picnic areas in their day’s itinerary. Check the condition of the facilities before visiting.
