Discover Saint-Urcize through a range of different themes: the church’s architectural history, the donjon of the former castle, Nordic activities and guided outdoor experiences. You can also learn about local production. To plan your stay, first decide whether architecture and history, physical activity or regional products will be your focus.
Church and medieval history
The present-day church building in Saint-Urcize dates from the 11th and 14th centuries and is dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Michael. Behind the choir, the church has an ambulatory. This feature draws attention to the layout of the space, while the dedication offers a distinct way to explore the building’s history. The construction period, architecture and dedication each provide a different focus for learning about the church.
Another historical trace leads to the former castle of Saint-Urcize. Its donjon, the Salle-Court, consisted of three vaulted levels stacked on top of one another and stood on what is now the Rocher de la Vierge. The church and donjon offer different points of interest: the present-day church building and its architectural history on the one hand, and part of the former castle on the other. Those interested in the history of the village can thus explore both sacred architecture and a tangible reminder of the medieval castle.
Nordic activities and landscape
The Patras cross-country ski trail is 4.2 km long. Snowshoeing is offered as a Nordic activity in the Pas de Mathieu sector; seasonal conditions may vary. This gives you two different types of activities to consider when planning. Check conditions for snowshoeing before your visit.
The glacial Hère Valley lies near Saint-Urcize and is bordered by cliffs and basalt scree slopes. The valley offers a different focus from the sporting activities: here, the main points of interest are its glacial formation and basalt scree slopes. As well as activities, you can therefore take the area’s geological features into account when deciding what interests you.
Guided experiences and regional produce
The Bureau des Accompagnateurs des Monts d’Aubrac offers an introduction to orienteering, with four courses in the forest of Saint-Urcize. There are also hikes suitable for both fit visitors and beginners. Guided discovery tours of the Aubrac area focus on flora, fauna, geology, agropastoralism, history, heritage and gastronomy. The experiences therefore vary in both activity type and subject. As program details may change, check the specific offering before making plans.
Since 2023, Les Jardins de Jade has produced around sixty different varieties of organic vegetables in Saint-Urcize using the living-soil cultivation method. The farm sells its produce directly at the farm and at the markets in Saint-Urcize and Chaudes Aigues from April to October. This period provides a seasonal guide if you plan to buy directly or visit the markets mentioned.
For groups, La Petite Laiterie de l’Aubrac offers workshop visits on Friday afternoons by prior reservation. If you want to include this visit in your plans, take both the day of the week and the reservation requirement into account.
