Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère lies on the Planèze de Saint-Flour, a vast volcanic plateau formed by the former Cantal volcano. Several experiences come together in the commune to help you plan your trip: a challenging circular hiking trail, mountain bike routes, a producers’ market and historic architecture. The routes vary in format, mode of travel and scenic or cultural focus.
Hiking on an Ancient Roman Road
The Voie de Rochegonde starts at Place de l'Église in Neuvéglise and is a 15-kilometre circular hiking trail. It is rated difficult, with a stated duration of 4 hours and 15 minutes. The route follows an ancient Roman road and offers views of Rochegonde, the Épie Valley and the Monts du Cantal. The circular route thus combines a historic road alignment with views of several named landscapes; its distance, difficulty rating and duration also provide important information to help you plan.
Mountain Biking: Distinguishing the Route from the Section
The Grand Tour VTT “Saint-Flour Horizons Volcaniques” is designed as a five-day route with five stages for conventional and electric mountain bikes. One section, from Neuvéglise to Pierrefort, is 21 kilometres long and starts at the church square in Neuvéglise. The Voie de Rochegonde also starts at Place de l'Église. However, the routes differ in format: 15 kilometres refers to a hiking loop, while 21 kilometres is the mountain-bike section within the multi-day route. Before setting off, check route conditions and signage, as route details may change.
Market and Practical Information
The producers’ market in Neuvéglise is held at Place de l'église, 15260 Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère. Numerous local producers gather there. The programme includes musical performances and folklore, which may vary by season. If music or folklore is important to your visit, check the specific dates in advance.
The Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère tourist office provides a leaflet for the Parcours découverte de Neuvéglise, as well as a practical guide with useful addresses in Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère. The guide’s contents may be updated, so check important addresses in advance.
Heritage in the Commune
Château de Rochebrune, in the commune of Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère, is a medieval fortress typical of the Cantal. It is listed in its entirety in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments, including the terraced gardens and interior fittings. In Fressanges, also within the commune, stands the small Église de Fressanges, dedicated to Saint Anne and featuring stained-glass windows by the glass artist Decorchemont.
The Circuit VTT n°32 “Vernuéjols” passes through the village of Vernuéjols, where numerous old stone farm buildings of the “Ferme-bloc” type can be seen. The route also climbs onto the volcanic plateau of the Planèze and offers views of the Monts du Cantal. This circuit thus combines rural architecture with a landscape shaped by volcanic origins.
