Escource was first mentioned in 1077 under the name SCORSA. Alongside this early trace of its name, springs, resin collectors’ huts and the Heit a escorce basketry workshop shape the town’s local character. For outdoor activities, there is the marked Le Bourg–Jurman–Bouheben trail, intended for hiking and mountain biking. Local history, crafts and a specific route thus come together; which aspect you give greater weight to depends on the focus of your trip.

Church and historical traces

The present-day church probably stands on the site of an earlier church dedicated to Saint Martin. To the east of the church there were historically a small fortified gatehouse and a ravelin. A ravelin is a crescent-shaped bastion; both structures served to defend the church entrance. Not all of these defensive structures have survived to the present day. The spring near Escource dedicated to Saint Roch was historically associated with processions in mid-August.

Watercourses and springs

Escource has about 34.3 kilometres of watercourses, including the Ruisseau d'Escource, which is 15.8 kilometres long. The figures use different measures: the first describes the entire water network, while the second refers to the individual stream. Three of the five springs in Escource considered miraculous lie on the Ruisseau d'Escource near Cap de Pin. Thus, alongside the length of a watercourse, the location and traditional significance of special springs are also part of the town’s character.

Hiking and mountain biking

The Le Bourg–Jurman–Bouheben trail has been designated and marked by elected representatives. It is specifically intended for hiking and mountain biking, so both activities follow the same named route. Trail conditions can change; check the current state of the route before setting out.

Resin collectors’ huts and basketry

The resin collectors’ huts are considered valuable evidence of the lives of earlier generations. They add work and everyday life to the story of the town. Heit a escorce is a basketry workshop that uses locally grown willow and wild plants gathered in the region. The materials therefore reflect two ways of sourcing them: deliberate cultivation and local foraging. By reservation, the workshop holds introductory basketry classes for individuals or small groups. If you choose this hands-on activity, confirm the class date in advance; reservation conditions can change.

Getting to Kart Landes 40

From Mimizan, the route to Kart Landes 40 passes through Escource in the direction of the A63. At the first roundabout by the motorway, follow the signs to the racetrack.

Different preparations

If you plan to take the marked trail and attend a basketry class, each requires different preparation: confirm the class date in advance and check the trail conditions closer to your outing. This way, you can plan around the requirements of each activity rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
