Biscarrosse offers several ways to shape your stay: cycling routes, water and nature, as well as historic buildings and events. When planning, consider which of these themes interest you most. The places and activities below offer specific starting points without prescribing a fixed daily itinerary.
Cycling routes and route
Biscarrosse has more than 50 kilometres of cycling routes. La Vélodyssée also passes through the town. The local section runs from Arcachon via Biscarrosse Plage to the town centre. These details answer different planning questions: the distance indicates the extent of the cycling routes, while the route names a specific sequence of places. If you would like to include cycling in your stay, you can use both as a guide when planning your own trip.
Lakes and nature
At Lac de Biscarrosse–Cazaux–Sanguinet, also known as Lac Nord, you can swim and enjoy water sports. Lac de Biscarrosse-Parentis, also called Lac de Latécoère, is one of France’s few seaplane bases. These lakes offer different connections with the water: swimming and water sports are the activities mentioned for Lac Nord, while the other lake is characterised by its role as a seaplane base.
The Lagune d’Hournaou lies in the Born et Buch Natura 2000 area and is recognised for its importance to fauna and flora. There is a signposted botanical trail there, about one kilometre long. It offers a specific focus on nature, while Le Petit lac is considered unspoilt and protected. These different descriptions give you two distinct ways to explore nature in Biscarrosse.
Activities in Biscarrosse Plage
At the entrance to Biscarrosse Plage, BISC’AVENTURE® park offers high ropes courses, four thrill activities and three challenge activities from April to November. The park also has more than 200 treetop games across 19 courses of increasing difficulty and height. The seasonal opening period and the graded courses are useful points of reference if you would like to include this activity in your travel plans.
Les Gascons de Biscarrosse at Cugnes in Biscarrosse Plage offer another way to explore the forest. By prior reservation, you can follow a discovery trail about pine resin tapping. Along the trail, visitors can learn about the forest and resin production. Unlike the park, which is described as seasonal, prior reservation is the specific requirement to bear in mind when planning this activity.
Building history and events
The Church of Saint Martin dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and is built of garluche, a stone typical of this part of the region. The building’s date and its regionally characteristic material offer two points of interest. Château de Montbron dates from the 14th century. During the English occupation of Aquitaine, it housed an English garrison belonging to the Prince of Wales and Prince of Aquitaine, known as the Black Prince. The château is not open to visitors.
The history of seaplanes is also reflected in a recurring event: the Rassemblement International d’Hydravions takes place every two years in May at the former Latécoère base on Lac Sud in Biscarrosse. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates of the relevant edition. This helps distinguish the event’s general recurrence from the specific dates of any one gathering.
When choosing a hotel, you can first decide on the focus of your stay: cycling, lakes and nature, or the history of buildings and events. These themes offer different reasons to visit Biscarrosse; which ones you combine depends on your interests and your own plans.
