Arthez-d'Armagnac offers several distinct ways to explore the area: the bastide of “Arthez Gaston” reflects its founding, the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste brings together architectural and art history, and Domaine d'Ognoas adds vineyard landscapes and local products. This selection is complemented by a four-kilometre family adventure. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: historic sites, the landscape of winegrowing, or an activity with a set route length.

Bastide and church: history across several centuries

The bastide of Arthez-d'Armagnac, also known as “Arthez Gaston”, was founded in 1320. The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built as early as the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was given a stone defensive tower with loopholes; murals from the 14th and 16th centuries have been preserved in the church. Several periods can therefore be seen side by side: the church predates the founding of the bastide, the defensive tower was added later, and the murals date from two different centuries. Anyone interested in the development of historic buildings will find not only a founding date here, but also architectural and artistic details.

The alambic at Domaine d'Ognoas is also a heritage landmark: the entire structure is listed as a Monument historique. It was listed by decree on 20 October 2006. This date refers to its heritage listing and should be distinguished from the historical dates relating to the origins and construction of the bastide and church.

The dates therefore answer different questions: 1320 marks the founding of the bastide; the centuries associated with the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste place its construction, tower and murals in context; and 2006 dates the listing of the entire alambic. This distinction helps keep the history of the founding, construction and heritage protection separate.

Domaine d'Ognoas: vineyards and products

At Domaine d'Ognoas, the focus shifts from historic buildings to the vineyard. The vineyard of the Domaine départemental d'Ognoas lies on siliceous-clay soils and sunny plateaus. Soil type and location are two distinct features of the vineyard; they offer a different perspective on the landscape alongside the dated buildings.

Domaine d'Ognoas is associated with Armagnacs, Floc de Gascogne, the XL40 and Moon Night chocolates, and brandy. This selection ranges from several types of drink to two specifically named chocolates. It adds a culinary perspective alongside the vineyard landscape.

Terra Aventura: a four-kilometre family adventure

Terra Aventura offers a different kind of experience: Ognoas, perle de l'Armagnac. This family adventure is four kilometres long and takes place in Arthez-d'Armagnac. Unlike the historical facts, which span several centuries, this activity has a clearly specified route length. Check that the route is available before setting off. This puts a cultural look at several historical periods alongside a family activity with a stated route length as two distinct options.
