Luxey combines church architecture and industrial history with art, events and riverside landscapes. These varied themes offer different starting points for planning a trip: from the history of resin processing to a festival featuring street art and music in the forest.

Church Architecture and the History of the Landes Forest

The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was rebuilt between 1864 and 1876 by the architect Alexandre Ozanne. Its distinctive features include three naves and a bell tower topped by an octagonal stone spire. Its construction period, architect and design give the church a clearly defined place in the history of the town.

The Atelier-musée has been designated a “Musée de France” since September 17, 2003. Its industrial history goes back further: the former factory operated from 1859 to 1954 and is the last known pre-industrial site in the Forêt des Landes de Gascogne. The former production site and its later museum designation thus represent two distinct chapters in this place’s history.

The Atelier-musée features buildings used to store barrels of rosin and turpentine, a distillation plant, tools for resin collection and a cooperage. Together, these offer a glimpse into different aspects of resin processing: collection, distillation, storage and barrel-making. Visitors interested in industrial heritage will find more than a single machine or isolated tool here; the different elements can be seen as parts of a broader working environment.

Museums and the History of Forest Firefighting

The Estupe Huc Museum offers another historical perspective. It presents the history of efforts to fight the major forest fires of 1947 and 1949, leading up to the founding of the fire service. Individuals and groups can visit the museum year-round by booking in advance. The history of forest firefighting thus complements the story of resin processing with another aspect of local history.

Art, the River and Riverside Paths

The Hello Apollo sculpture is located in the pond at Luxey. The Petite Leyre in Luxey has calm waters and inviting banks. Both put water at the heart of the experience, but in different ways: as the setting for a work of art and as a defining feature of a river and its banks.

The path at the Site de Garlande in Luxey winds through wooded areas and meadows along the river. Its description thus brings together several landscape features along one route. The Site de Garlande et Gaouchey, by contrast, can only be visited as part of a guided tour booked in advance. Be sure to arrange your visit before you travel.

Events in Different Formats

Musicalarue brings together street art and music in the heart of the forest. The festival is held regularly in Luxey on the last weekend of July; the exact dates vary from one edition to the next. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for the edition you intend to attend. This lets you take the recurring time frame into account without assuming a specific date.

Les Cigales offers performances, concerts, artist residencies and workshops for young artists. Its program changes over time. The Cercle de l'Union hosts exhibitions by local artists and several concert evenings each year. These formats differ from the festival: Les Cigales combines various types of cultural events, while the Cercle de l'Union features exhibitions and concert evenings. If your trip is centered on a particular performance or concert, it’s worth checking the latest dates.
