A 17-kilometre loop with a 12-kilometre shortcut, a discovery trail exploring the village’s history, and historical links to the Way of St James give Habas a varied character. The village lies on the hills above the Gave de Pau. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether a hike with a choice of route lengths or the village’s history and local orientation should take centre stage.
Hiking trails with different profiles
The Boucle des ruisseaux de Chalosse is 17 kilometres long. At the Route du Château d'eau, it can be shortened to a 12-kilometre loop. The route starts and ends at the Lavoir and is open to hikers, runners and mountain bikers. This gives you two distance options for this outing. Check the latest route information before setting off.
The Circuit des Arrigans has a different character and runs through the northern part of the Habas area. It follows quiet back roads, „cantères“ and sunken earth tracks through leafy woodland. Check trail conditions locally before setting off.
The Circuit Lataillade gradually descends south towards the Gave de Pau valley. The three routes call for different planning priorities: distance, trail conditions and the route towards the valley.
Village history and heritage
The Parcours Découverte was established on 3 April 2023 with the support of the Office du Tourisme du Pays d'Orthe et Arrigans. It offers a way to discover the village of Habas, its heritage and its history. It complements the hiking options with a specific cultural focus.
In the village centre, you can visit the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The old washhouse is part of the commune’s rich heritage. Since the 14th century, Habas has been on a route to Santiago de Compostela—a historical link connecting the village’s story with the pilgrimage route.
Habas’s market history is also part of its past: in 1638, Louis XIII granted the commune a patent authorising a weekly market on Fridays. A lively trade developed around the market, alongside a wide range of local shops and crafts. The connection to the pilgrimage route dates back further than the 1638 market charter.
Finding your way around
The Rachède spring is about 300 metres from the village centre. The people of Habas have always drawn their water from this spring. Check local access conditions before visiting.
The Boulevard des Pyrénées is shaded by venerable plane trees. For local orientation, the visitor information recommends parking at the foot of the church and walking along the lively Rue Centrale. Check parking options locally.
