Saint-Cricq-Chalosse brings together a village centre on a rounded ridge and striking reminders of its architectural and everyday history. Château de Poudenx, the Church of Saint-Cyr, the washhouse, mills and arenas offer visitors a range of cultural points of interest. The Lac de Poudenx and a circular route with views of the Pyrenees add to the appeal.
Elevated setting and views
The present-day Château de Poudenx was built in the early 18th century. It stands on the crest of a rounded hill, which also extends beneath the village centre. To the south, the château overlooks the deep valley of Bordes and the wooded slopes towards Brassempouy. Panoramic 360-degree views can be enjoyed from several places, including the château park, the arenas and the Church of Saint-Cyr. This makes it possible to distinguish the château’s southern view from the all-round views available from several locations in the village.
Church, spring and washhouse
The Church of Saint-Cyr has a long building history. The original building was a small Romanesque structure, probably founded in the 12th century. In the 13th century, the church was extended with a second, larger nave. The interior was also renovated: volunteers first took on the work, followed by professional companies. These different phases link a presumed early origin with a later structural extension and the renovation of the interior.
The Fontaine Sainte-Anne is the spring that feeds the Lavoir de Mousquette. Volunteers from the community restored the washhouse in 1989. Decorated with flowers, it is a place of remembrance that invites quiet reflection. Here, the village’s connection to water, its restoration history and its quiet commemorative character come together.
Mills, arenas and a wayside cross
The Moulin d’Arricau is a 16th-century mill on the Louts, equipped with three pairs of millstones. The Moulin de Saint-Cricq is a heritage site whose preservation is important for understanding traditional milling. The two mills have different points of interest: at Arricau, these are its age, riverside location and milling technology; at the Moulin de Saint-Cricq, the focus is on the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
The permanent arenas of Saint-Cricq-Chalosse were built in 1954. Wooden arenas stood there previously; the construction of the permanent venue was linked to the residents’ connection with bullfighting culture. Another landmark for travellers is the Croix de chemin de Saint-Cricq-Chalosse, a freestanding wooden wayside cross.
Lake and circular route
The Lac de Poudenx is a recreational spot below the château of the same name, Château de Poudenx. To reach the lake, walk past the children’s playground and descend the wooded slopes along Allée du Lac. The route leads down to the lake; the château’s position on the crest of the hill offers a different vantage point on the landscape.
The Circuit de Pédouhaout is an easy, 6.2-kilometre circular route suitable for beginners. The loop starts at the town hall, where parking is available, and offers views of the Pyrenees mountain range. Unlike the descent to the Lac de Poudenx, the Circuit is described as a circular route; its length, difficulty level and views provide practical guidance when choosing between these two landscape experiences.
