Lacanau-Océan combines surfing and water sports with beaches, architecture and culture. You can focus your stay on activities on the water, explore the heritage of the seaside resort on foot, or make time for cinema and events. The options offer different experiences, without requiring you to fit every activity into the same day.
Water sports and activities
Lacanau Surf Club is based at the Maison de la Glisse above Central Beach and is open year-round. As its operations may change, check the latest information before visiting. The “Club Loisirs” package includes surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding for all ages, from five years old through adulthood. Programme details may also change; if you have a particular activity in mind, it is worth checking the current offer.
Club de Kayak Lacanau Guyenne offers waveskiing on the sea and canoeing on Lac de Lacanau. Another place to get active is Skatepark de l’Océan: the skate facility on the dune in Lacanau-Océan covers 800 m². Numerous cycle paths run through the town. Terra Medoca is another option for circular routes explored on foot or by bike: this environmental art trail was established in 2023 and has three loops.
Beaches and walking tours
Super Sud Beach can be reached via boardwalks over the dune and is considered the wildest beach in Lacanau-Océan. The beaches are patrolled seasonally; patrol dates may change. Check the current hours if patrols are important to your plans.
The Circuit des Villas Canaulaises is a walking route through the centre of Lacanau-Océan that showcases the architectural heritage of the seaside resort. The route is 2.4 kilometres long, takes about an hour and is open year-round. As route conditions may change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.
Another landmark is the wreck of the Cantabria, about a 25-minute walk north of Plage Nord. It is visible at low tide and during high tidal coefficients. If you want to see the wreck, take these conditions into account when planning your visit.
Cinema, architecture and events
At the entrance to Lacanau-Océan, L’Escoure welcomes the public as a venue for events, exhibitions and films. The venue has the “Art & Essai” label; its programme ranges from American blockbusters to documentaries. As the programme may change, check current screenings and dates for a specific visit.
The modern Notre Dame des Flots church is also part of the town’s architectural history: construction began in 1964. Lacanau Pro is an annual surfing event held every August since 1979 and is one of France’s oldest surf competitions. If you would like to plan your trip around the competition, check the specific event dates in advance.
Nearby Lac de Lacanau
Lac de Lacanau is nearby, six kilometres from the centre. Swimming and fishing are possible there. A marked trail suitable for family outings starts at Longarisse on the southwest shore. Access and patrols may vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning your visit.
