An intact remnant of the Château du baron Pierre de Coubertin, traditional woodcraft and two hikes with different emphases shape the ways to explore Luttenbach-près-Munster. The family hike passes through woodland, along streams and clearings; the Tour du Petit Ballon leads to the 1,250-metre-high Petit Ballon and offers panoramic views as well as views over the Munster and Guebwiller valleys. Remains from the First World War can also be discovered along this route. Cultural history, craftsmanship and hiking landscapes thus offer distinct focuses to choose from for your trip.

Cultural history and traditional craftsmanship

Only a remnant of the Château du baron Pierre de Coubertin remains. After Jean Georges Gustave Rothan died in 1890, the estate passed to his son-in-law, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The château is thus tangible as a physical trace; the year 1890 marks the transfer of the estate.

The Fontaine aux dauphins is a pink sandstone fountain with three basins arranged one above the other. Looking at the structure, its material and construction can be clearly distinguished: pink sandstone and the tiered sequence of the three basins define its design.

At the Atelier de saboterie et boissellerie Pauline, wooden boards and clogs are made using machinery from an earlier era and traditional craftsmanship. The products, machinery and craft reveal different aspects of the workshop. Visits are available on Thursdays during school holidays and outside school holidays by appointment. Check the date in advance, as the schedule may change.

Hiking: woodland paths and views

The family hike Balade famille en forêt de Luttenbach passes through Luttenbach forest among streams, clearings and viewpoints. It is 4.6 kilometres long, has 185 metres of elevation gain and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. For planning your day, the approximate duration provides a time estimate; the distance and elevation gain add further concrete details about the route.

The hike starts on Rue de l’École to the right of the town hall. Parking is available nearby. If you are coming from Munster, follow the D10 and turn left before the Luttenbach-près-Munster town sign towards fermes-auberges and Petit Ballon.

The Tour du Petit Ballon circular route leads to the 1,250-metre-high Petit Ballon. It offers panoramic views as well as views over the Munster and Guebwiller valleys; remains from the First World War can be discovered along the route. The summit destination, valley views and historical traces define the hiking focus here.

Different considerations matter when choosing between the two hikes: the family hike can be assessed in terms of distance, elevation gain and approximate duration. The Tour du Petit Ballon focuses on the summit destination, views and remains from the First World War.
