Uffholtz can be explored through several tangible traces of its village history: at the Abri Mémoire, the Saint-Erasme parish church and along the signposted Fil rouge discovery trail. There is also the Coteaux du Vieil-Armand wine trail and three marked mountain biking routes through the forest. To plan your visit, first decide whether your main interest is local history, winegrowing tradition or a bike ride.

Local History at the Abri Mémoire

The Abri Mémoire was renovated, renamed and opened to the public in summer 2010. It serves as a resource centre and as a venue for artistic engagement and education in citizenship and peace. Its facilities include two exhibition halls, a documentation centre, a conference room and an artist residency. Concerts, performances and theatre are also part of its cultural programme. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements and programme in advance.

Another historical landmark is the present-day Saint-Erasme parish church. It was built between 1924 and 1927 on the site of the 1825 church, which had been destroyed in the First World War. This means that two clearly distinct building phases are associated with this site: the 19th-century predecessor and the present-day church, built after the war. This chronology gives the village’s history a concrete timeframe.

Saint-Antoine: Chapel and Wine Tradition

The Saint-Antoine Chapel stands on the outskirts of Uffholtz, on a hillside near the road to Hartmannswillerkopf. It was consecrated in 1958. The Saint-Antoine tradition, renewed over time, includes a night-time procession through the vineyards to the chapel. If this event is important to your travel plans, check for a specific date in advance.

Choose Routes Based on Your Interests

The signposted Fil rouge discovery trail runs through Uffholtz. At 29 marked points, information panels explain the remains and history of the village. The Coteaux du Vieil-Armand wine trail offers a different focus: it starts at Place Aloyse-Claussmann in the centre and is 5 km long. The two routes therefore offer different points of interest: the Fil rouge focuses on the information at each stop, while the wine trail is defined by its theme, starting point and length.

There is also a specific option for a bike ride: three marked mountain biking routes run through the Uffholtz forest. Their number and markings help with orientation, but do not replace checking conditions on site. As trail conditions and signage can change seasonally, check them before setting out. You can then choose your activities based on whether you want to explore cultural history on foot, follow routes devoted to winegrowing or ride a mountain bike.
