Pulversheim brings together a landscape of the Thur and wetlands with a distinctive mining and settlement heritage. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both perspectives: depending on your interests, the focus may be on nature, architectural history, or the industrial past.
The Thur Landscape
The landscape around Pulversheim includes forests, orchards, farmland, and the River Thur. The Thur marshes lie to the northwest of the municipality. The landscape therefore ranges from cultivated land to forest, river, and wetland; this landscape perspective is a distinct part of choosing where to visit, alongside the industrial heritage.
Settlement and Industrial History
The Cité des mines is part of the cultural heritage of the workers’ settlements that developed in the Haut-Rhin in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is characterized by semi-detached houses with converted upper floors beneath mansard roofs and Dutch-style roofs. This brings both the historical context of the workers’ settlements and their specific architecture into focus.
The Cité Sainte-Thérèse offers a different perspective on settlement history: it was laid out on the model of English garden cities. This gives Pulversheim’s settlement history a distinct garden city connection alongside its workers’ settlement heritage. The settlement sites draw attention to architectural and planning models, while the Carreau Rodolphe highlights the technical side of mining.
The industrial heritage can be seen at the Carreau Rodolphe. In the Rodolphe 1 headframe, a lamp room and the miners’ changing room, known as the «salle des pendus», have been reconstructed. The site includes two headframes, two restored, operational winding engines dating from 1912 and 1928, and above-ground ore-processing facilities. It also features a complete collection of mining machinery from 1950 to 2004, unique in France.
The Carreau Rodolphe will be closed for one year from June 15, 2026. Before travelling, check whether the site has reopened. Once it reopens, you can reach it from Mulhouse railway station by tram line 1, followed by bus 54 toward Alsace–Carreau Rodolphe; check the timetable before setting out.
Compare Routes and Plan Your Journey
The Route de la Potasse is an 18 km circular route north of Mulhouse that passes through four municipalities. It includes four notable mining sites and five other attractions. You can follow it independently using the Cirkwi smartphone app; check that the app is available and review current route conditions before planning your trip. A vehicle is required for this route.
The Circuit de l’Ecomusée in Ungersheim and Pulversheim is 8 km long, making it less than half the length of the 18 km Route de la Potasse circular route.
