Russ brings together local history, church architecture and two routes with clearly distinct focuses. The Circuit Vélo B03 cycling route passes through the town; the Circuit Rando B08: La Marbrière circular hiking trail is designed to help visitors discover the area’s geological features and is intended for experienced hikers. The former La Marbrière marble quarry and the visible piles of stones near Oberruss also add a historical perspective to trip planning.

Local History and Saint-Etienne

Russ was first mentioned in 1306, in a record belonging to the Diocese of Strasbourg. A later turning point came on August 10, 1837, when a fire destroyed the former parish church and 22 houses. The community then decided to build a larger new church, Saint-Etienne. It was completed in 1842. The five years between the fire and completion mark a significant period in the church’s construction history.

Saint-Etienne has a portal tower integrated into the main structure, a three-aisled nave, a semicircular choir and a sacristy on the east side. A three-aisled nave is divided into three aisles; the semicircular choir forms a rounded end to the church interior. These architectural features add specific context to the completion date.

Marble and Visible Traces of Former Houses

La Marbrière was once a marble quarry; the marble extracted there was considered particularly high-quality and beautiful. Near Oberruss, close to the hamlet of Muckenbach, a path reinforced with stones and numerous piles of stones are visible, apparently indicating the locations of former houses. The two places thus offer different historical perspectives: past marble extraction and the possible locations of former houses.

Hiking or Cycling

The Circuit Rando B08: La Marbrière circular hiking trail is intended for experienced hikers and leads to the area’s geological features. The Circuit Vélo B03: Sur les hauteurs de Wisches cycling route passes through Russ. It is 18 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of about two hours and 30 minutes. The routes therefore differ both in activity and in the information available for planning: the hiking trail highlights its target group and geology, while the cycling route also has a stated distance and approximate riding time.

The cycling route duration is an estimate, and route information may be updated. Check the latest route information before planning your trip. This will help you estimate how long the cycling trip may take while also keeping in mind that the circular hiking trail is specifically intended for experienced hikers.

Rail and Station Information

A municipal description from 2015 places Russ/Hersbach station on the Strasbourg–Saint-Dié railway line. Check current rail services before travelling. The description of the station redevelopment, also dated 2015, lists 49 parking spaces, including six long-stay spaces and two spaces for people with reduced mobility with direct access to the platform. It also mentions a bus stop and a short-stay zone. Check the current status of these facilities before including them in your plans.
