Matzenheim’s history can be explored through several tangible traces: Château de Werde, Saint-Sigismond Parish Church, Moulin de Werde and a half-timbered house in Niederfeld each reveal different facets of the town. Brasserie Matten adds a present-day production site, whose shop offers tastings and purchases. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these themes: historic buildings and the reliquary give your stay a cultural focus, while the brewery offers a different perspective on local production.

Château de Werde and historical milestones

Château de Werde brings together local history and a clearly specified protected status. Its construction is attributed to Sigebert III around 1185; both the attribution and the approximate date are part of its historical context. The château is in the Woerth district of Matzenheim and has been partly listed as a historic monument since 19 August 1993. Château de Werde and Moulin de Werde lie in the arms of the Ill. The mill is associated with a different event: it was rebuilt by the nobles of Seebach in 1575. The dates therefore do not refer to two equivalent construction beginnings: the château’s construction is attributed to Sigebert III, while the mill was rebuilt. Another milestone in the town dates to 1869, when the main building and chapel of Collège Saint-Joseph were built.

Church and reliquary

Another key site is Saint-Sigismond Parish Church. Saint Sigismund is its patron saint, and the church also houses the reliquary containing his skull. This reliquary was classified as a protected historic object in 1995. The patronage and the protected status concern different aspects: the church’s religious dedication and the status of a specific object. For travellers interested in religious heritage, this connection offers a tangible way to explore the town’s history.

Half-timbered house in Niederfeld

Another historical trace is found in the Niederfeld district. The house at 3 route de Strasbourg is listed as a historic monument and is privately owned. Its lintel is dated 1624. It is also a half-timbered building with infill of clay on laths. Half-timbering refers to a framework of wood with infilled panels; the clay and laths make this house’s construction more specific. The date on the lintel and the building method offer two separate clues to its architectural context. The year refers to a particular building element, while the details about materials and construction focus on how it was built. Together, they provide a precise picture of this private house without equating it with Matzenheim’s other buildings.

Brasserie Matten: production and visits

Brasserie Matten shifts the focus from historic buildings to present-day production. The brewery makes craft beers and a variety of spirits in Matzenheim; the product range may change. Visitors can discover, taste and buy its products in the on-site shop. This provides a tangible connection with the town’s current local production alongside its history. Brasserie Matten welcomes visitors Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00. These hours apply from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. Check the visitor arrangements before your visit, before firmly planning a tasting or purchase. This lets you consider the stop in light of the stated period, while Château de Werde, the church, the mill and the half-timbered house are chiefly defined by their respective historical features.
