Steige offers a range of activities for a stay: a longer hike across the heights towards Climont, a shorter village walk with puzzles, and visits focused on history and craftsmanship. The published route lengths can help with planning; tours also have a set duration and must be arranged or booked in advance. First consider whether you prefer outdoor activity, a playful exploration, history or production.
Hiking and a village walk
The “Les hauts de Steige et le Climont” hiking trail is 12.9 km long and runs across the heights above Steige towards Climont. Check the current route before setting out, as it may be revised. The “Balade ludique à Steige” is a village walk with discovery stops and puzzles; it covers 2.5 km. This makes it considerably shorter than the high-altitude hike, but it offers a different kind of experience: instead of hiking across the heights, you explore Steige through stops and puzzles. There are three versions for children aged 4 to 12, as well as for the whole family. As the formats may change, check the available versions before your visit. When choosing between the two routes, consider both the distance and the kind of experience you want.
History in the cemetery chapel
Steige’s cemetery chapel is the choir of the former church. Demolition of that church began on 8 May 1877; the chapel contains a 12th-century baptistery. Here, you can discover both the architectural history of the former church and a 12th-century baptistery. One-hour tours are available for interested visitors, preferably in small groups. A 2026 municipal bulletin lists Roland Mangin as the contact for arranging a visit; confirm the arrangements again in advance.
Craftsmanship at Distillerie Nusbaumer
The artisanal Distillerie Nusbaumer in Steige was founded in 1947. It produces eaux-de-vie, fruit and herbal liqueurs, as well as gin and whisky; the product range may change over time. The distillery offers tours of about an hour by reservation. During the tour, visitors learn how eaux-de-vie, liqueurs and creams are made. The tour complements the product range with an explanation of the production process. Booking conditions may change, so confirm your appointment in advance.
Plan your tours and stay
The two routes differ clearly in length, while visits to the chapel and distillery require an appointment or reservation. If a tour is essential to your stay, arrange its time before booking accommodation. That way, you can schedule visits with fixed times first, then fit your chosen routes into the rest of your plans.
