Orimattila offers a variety of options for a stay: art collections, rural history, crafts, distinctive buildings and nature destinations. If you want to choose your outings based on your interests, you can weigh up the cultural sites, trails and outdoor activities here. Some attractions are in Artjärvi, and their themes range from astronomy and architecture to horse-riding experiences.
Art, Crafts and History
The core collection at the Orimattilan taidemuseo consists of works from the Ilmari and Toini Wall-Hakala Art Foundation. The Orimattilan kotiseutumuseo focuses on rural life around the turn of the 20th century. The two museums therefore have different emphases: one presents the art collection associated with the foundation, while the other offers a historical glimpse into life in the countryside.
The Pitsitupa is devoted to traditional bobbin lace, local handicrafts and the lace-making culture of Heinämaa. It offers exhibitions, demonstrations and courses, as well as opportunities to try bobbin lace-making yourself. If you want to combine your visit with a particular activity, check what is currently on offer before your trip.
The Tönnö Museum Bridge also tells the story of the area's construction history. Completed in 1911, it is considered Finland's first arch bridge and the country's oldest surviving reinforced-concrete bridge. Together with Tönnönkoski and the old mill, it forms a nationally significant cultural landscape. The bridge, river stretch and mill are distinct elements of this cultural environment.
Artjärvi: Stargazing, Architecture and Horses
Artjärvi is home to Artjärven kirkko, a historic cruciform church with Empire-style influences, completed in 1840. For anyone interested in architectural history, it offers a clearly dated point of reference: the church dates from the 19th century and combines the cruciform church style with Empire features.
Tähtikallio in Artjärvi offers a very different subject. This observation and education centre, run by Ursa, has good astronomical observation equipment and spacious facilities. It is used for independent observations, amateur astronomy gatherings and courses. Important for planning: visits are possible by prior arrangement only. A spontaneous visit without making arrangements is therefore not a suitable basis for planning your outing.
Tortolan Tallit offers riding lessons, riding camps, training and riding experiences in a rural setting. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check current availability with the provider, as it may change. This lets you plan around the activity you want rather than assuming that riding activities are always available.
Compare Trails by Length
The Lamminpolku–Rajasuonpolku circular route in Artjärvi has two sections of different lengths: the 2.5-kilometre Lamminpolku and the 6-kilometre Rajasuonpolku. Another trail, the 10-kilometre Villisikapolku, starts in the centre of Artjärvi and leads to the Myrskylä border. The distances give you a concrete basis for comparing routes when planning your hike. The trails differ not only in length, but also in that the Villisikapolku is described with named start and end points.
For a nature trail with a designated protected-area connection, consider Mieliäissuo: the nature trail is located in a Natura 2000 area. Another nature destination is Myllykulmankoski on the Porvoonjoki, described as an easily accessible place for an outing. Nature and history meet there: the water flows over a rocky sill and then continues downstream as whitewater.
Animals and a Lakeside Stay
The Orimattilan kotieläinpuisto has animals ranging from alpacas to ponies. This gives a visit a different focus from the museums, historic buildings and trails: here, the focus is on the animals and their variety.
The municipally maintained Pyykkinekan uimaranta bathing beach is on Lake Pyhäjärvi and has a pier and a boat slipway. If you plan to use these facilities, check their current condition before your visit, as operating details may change. Alongside museums and trails, you can therefore choose from local options that include a beach and facilities for boats.
