Vierumäki combines a landscape shaped by geology with marked trails and a wide range of sporting activities. When planning, you can choose according to activity and season: the nature trails are open for hiking year-round, while the ski trails are used for skiing in winter and hiking and jogging in summer. Other options range from mountain biking to SUP and canoeing on Lake Valkjärvi.

Nature trails between lakes and eskers

Vierumäki lies on the sandur and delta plains of the Second Salpausselkä, formed from sand and gravel at the edge of the continental ice sheet almost 12,000 years ago. Nature trails in Vierumäki run along narrow, steep-sided eskers surrounded by small lakes. The Lemmenharju nature trail passes clear lakes and beautiful eskers and is 4.1 kilometres long. Marked nature trails and the existing trail network make it possible to hike year-round and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. If you want to include a single route with a specified distance in your plans, you can use the Lemmenharju Trail as a guide; the trail network also offers other hiking options.

Routes and seasonal activities

Vierumäki has a network of cycling and hiking trails. The illuminated Valo-Ilves route runs for 12 kilometres from Vierumäki to the Jyränkö district of Heinola. In winter, the illuminated ski trails range from 3 to 25 kilometres. In summer, the trails become well-maintained nature paths for hiking and jogging. Their use therefore varies by season: cross-country skiing is the main activity on the trails in winter, while hiking and jogging take centre stage in summer.

Mountain biking, climbing and disc golf

There are mountain bike trails of 3, 5, 7 and 10 kilometres in the vicinity of Vierumäki. Mountain bikes can be rented at the local Outdoor Centre or through the online shop. If you plan to go mountain biking, check rental options before your trip, as operating arrangements may change.

Flowpark’s adventure courses run through living trees without damaging them. Depending on skill level, the challenges include wobbly paths, liana jumps, swings and ziplines. The climbing adventure park offers challenging, Tarzan-style adventures for the whole family or a group of friends.

The Vierumäki area also has a family-friendly disc golf course with seven holes. It is approximately one kilometre long and starts at the ice arena. The number of holes and approximate length describe the course from two different perspectives: as a game with seven holes and as a route of around one kilometre.

Water activities and sporting facilities

SUP boards and canoes are available at Melontaranta on the shore of Lake Valkjärvi. You can enjoy a sauna and swim at Vierumäki’s lakeside saunas; opening times for individual saunas vary by season. As well as activities on trails and at sports facilities, there are also options on the water.

The sporting facilities include an ice arena, a multipurpose arena, a tennis and padel hall, a sports hall, swimming pools and outdoor facilities. They offer a wide range of opportunities for focused training in different sports. The Finnish Institute of Sport is an official training and coaching centre of the Finnish Olympic Committee.
