Lahti offers a variety of ways to shape a trip: art and design in the city centre, museums covering topics from local history to broadcasting technology, and trails through urban parks and landscapes. When planning, you can first decide whether to focus on culture or outdoor activities. There are also different ways to explore the surrounding area in winter.
Museums, Art and Local History
In the centre of Lahti is Malva, a museum of art, design, posters and culture. It is also home to “Ahto”, an interactive artwork by the Finnish collective Ekho. It responds to visitor traffic and is located in the museum’s Light Gallery. Alongside its other subject areas, Malva therefore offers a concrete example of an artwork whose behaviour is linked to the movement of visitors.
Sibelius Hall, a congress and concert centre in Lahti, is located on Lake Vesijärvi. The building was constructed in 2000 next to an old factory building. Its modern wooden architecture connects with the site’s industrial history. Another historical landmark is the former Lahti Manor, which houses the Lahti Historical Museum. The pink building was completed in 1898.
The Radio and TV Museum Mastola is located on Radiomäki, at the foot of Lahti’s 150-metre-high radio masts. Its collection includes broadcasting and studio technology, equipment for amateur radio operators and DX listeners, devices for private audio recording, radio tubes and telephone equipment. Mastola offers learning activities about radio and television for children and adults. Alongside the exhibits, exploring the worlds of radio and television is also a central focus.
The Motorcycle Museum of Finland preserves up to 100 motorcycles as well as other objects related to motorcycle sports. The same building is also home to the Ace Cafe Lahti restaurant, which serves burgers, fresh salads and more. This lets you combine a museum visit with a meal in the same building.
City Trails and Landscapes
Lehmusreitti is an approximately 13-kilometre urban nature trail around the centre of Lahti. It passes through city parks, by viewpoints and past sites of cultural and historical interest. If you are looking for a route linked to the city centre, it offers a different kind of orientation from the Salpausselkä area, where there are about 25 kilometres of marked trails for walkers, runners and cyclists. The two descriptions have different focuses: one is a trail around the centre, while the other is a network of marked trails for several types of outdoor activity.
Linnaistensuo offers another perspective on nature, a short drive from the centre of Lahti. There is a boardwalk and information boards about the bog landscape. This adds a named location to the city’s surroundings where the bog landscape itself is the focus of the trail.
Salpausselkä and Winter Sports
Lahti and the Salpausselkä ridges have around 180 kilometres of cross-country ski trails in total, 70 kilometres of which are lit. The Ski Museum is next to the Salpausselkä ski jumps. A network of several dozen kilometres of skiing and walking trails begins right at its entrance. In the museum’s interactive area, you can explore snow and winter sports whatever the weather. The ski trails, walking routes and museum offer different ways to experience winter.
Betoni, a large ski jump built in 1972 and standing 80 metres tall, is located in Lahti’s sports centre. The varied landscapes of Salpausselkä also begin at the sports centre, offering opportunities for walkers, mountain bikers and trail runners. If you are deciding between a visit with a winter sports focus and outdoor exercise, you can distinguish between the different local offerings: ski trails and the Ski Museum on the one hand, and landscapes for a range of activities on the other.
Getting Around on Foot
Malva is a 15-minute walk from Lahti railway station and travel centre. The Lahti Historical Museum is within walking distance of the city centre and harbour.
