The grain storehouse at the Hämeenkoski Local History Museum, designed by C. L. Engel, was built in 1856. The museum grounds also include a Häme-style dwelling, an outbuilding and a model of a shelter. The exhibition features items from the village shops in Miehola and Putula, as well as unique equipment for making lemonade. The buildings and the objects associated with village shops and lemonade-making thus offer distinct perspectives on cultural history.
Building history in the church village
Another building attributed to Engel is the Hämeenkoski bell tower, dating from 1824. The present-day church was consecrated on 27 November 1870. Together with the 1856 grain storehouse, these three dates offer different perspectives on Hämeenkoski’s building history: the bell tower, the storehouse and the consecration of the present-day church. Church visits can be arranged by appointment; allow time to make arrangements when planning your trip.
The ruins of the Church of St. Laurence (Pyhän Lauri) are older; construction dates to the first half of the 16th century. They are located where an old road meets Käikeläntie, which leads to Kurjala Manor. The ruins add a much earlier historical layer to the 19th-century buildings.
Cultural landscape and water
The cultural landscape of the Hämeenkoski church village and the Teuronjoki includes Hankalankosken pellavaloukku, a nationally significant built heritage site. Linnakallio, a prehistoric fortification, is also part of this cultural landscape area. Built heritage and archaeological traces of the past thus offer different perspectives on the landscape. For a cultural-historical overview, this broadens the view beyond the church, storehouse and museum to include the wider landscape.
The 122.7 km Vanajavesi canoe route starts in Hämeenkoski and leads to Vanajanselkä. Its total length and destination give you a clear idea of the route’s scope when planning. At the starting area, there is parking, a path to the shore of the Teuronjoki, and a canoe and swimming pier. Facilities may change, so check the current situation at the starting area before you travel.
The fishing spot considered the most suitable is on the Teuronjoki in the Hämeenkoski church village. Rainbow trout are stocked there several times a year; this stocking practice may change. Check the latest information if you plan to fish during your stay. The canoe route and fishing spot differ in scale: one is a 122.7 km route ending at Vanajanselkä, while the other is a single location where trout are stocked regularly. You can weigh up an extensive water route and a specific fishing spot as different priorities when planning your trip.
