Mustijoki, the trails in the Kotojärvi recreational area and historic buildings offer different focal points for a stay in Pornainen. When planning a trip on the river, it is worth considering the canoe route and the rapids tour separately: their lengths and the information about rapids refer to different stretches.

Canoe route, rapids and river

The canoe route on Mustijoki passes through Pornainen and is part of a river route about 65 kilometres long. Several day stages of varying lengths offer different options for planning your time. There are more than 20 rapids along the canoe route; about seven of them can be navigated by experienced paddlers. Water conditions affect suitability. Route conditions and portage options may also change, so it is advisable to check these details before setting out.

The Mustijoki rapids tour covers nine rapids in Pornainen. This number refers to the rapids tour; the figure of more than 20 refers to the rapids along the canoe route. The tour presents photo stops and experiences at each rapid as year-round options. Examples range from the impressive Halkiankoski to the idyllic Itälänkoski.

Lahankoski is a series of rapids: over a stretch of about 200 metres, Mustijoki drops by more than ten metres in total. The river also flows through the centre of Pornainen and is classified as a watercourse for migratory fish.

Trails and outdoor activities

The Kotojärvi recreational area brings together opportunities for exercise and spending time outdoors. These include a fitness trail, fitness stairs, outdoor fitness equipment and a network of trails. The area also has an accessible nature trail, a lean-to shelter, two toilets, a swimming beach, a children's playground, a beach volleyball court and a mountain biking trail. Check the facility details before your trip.

Hyötinmäki also has mountain biking trails offering options for different skill levels; their conditions may change. Another activity is available near the church village: a nine-hole disc golf course with two layouts. It is described as beginner-friendly. Options range from fitness facilities and trails in Kotojärvi to mountain biking trails in Hyötinmäki and disc golf near the church village.

In Laha, a scenic nature trail starts beside the bridge at the rapids and follows the river downstream. At Karjakoski, a wide outdoor trail leads to the destination; there is a small campfire site on the riverbank. These route descriptions each provide a specific landmark to help plan time outdoors.

Churches and cultural history sites

Lahan kartano is one of the most significant cultural history sites in Pornainen. The churches also offer specific points of reference for a cultural history itinerary: the older of the two bells at Pornainen Church dates from 1731. In Kirveskoski, the centre of Pornainen, stands a granite church completed in 1924. It was designed by Ilmari Launis.

The Pornainen Local Heritage Museum preserves cultural history and ecclesiastical objects, including items from the time of the first and second churches. It is temporarily closed. This restriction is important to bear in mind when planning; the collection described still offers insight into the subjects the museum preserves.
