On Hailuoto, the options range from short, easy paths to longer routes with named destinations. There are also maritime landmarks, local history and opportunities to observe nature. When planning your time, you can start with the distance you want to cover—or with whether a lighthouse, museum, landscape or birdwatching is especially important to you.
Hiking trails by distance and character
The accessible Marjaniemi Trail is 1.9 kilometres long, easy, and takes about 30 minutes. This makes it a clearly defined option for a short walk. The Hannuksenlampi Trail is a 5.2-kilometre circular route. Three forest ponds, a shelter and a fire pit are among the features of this route.
A longer option is the 14.2-kilometre Marjaniemi–Pöllä hiking trail. It starts at Marjaniemi Harbour and passes through old fishing villages on its way to Pöllä. The named stops include Pajuperä, with its old fishing village, and Sunikari, with its old fishing harbour. The routes therefore differ both in length and in whether the focus is on a loop or a route between named places.
These differences can help you choose more than a one-size-fits-all day plan: the Marjaniemi Trail combines a short distance with an approximate duration and an easy rating. The forest ponds and facilities along the Hannuksenlampi Trail shape its character. Marjaniemi–Pöllä is the longest of the three routes and runs from the harbour to Pöllä. You can choose your hike based on your timeframe, whether you prefer a loop, or your destination.
Lighthouse and maritime history
The Keskiniemi Daymark is Hailuoto’s oldest surviving sea mark and was completed in 1858. It can be reached via an old hiking trail. By car, you can drive to the end of Karvontie or Sunilahentie and then follow the old yellow trail markers. Road and trail-marking conditions can change, so check them before your visit.
The Marjaniemi Lighthouse also tells the story of Hailuoto’s maritime history: it has been in operation for more than 150 years. Guided tours go to the top and offer views of the old Marjaniemi fishing village and the surrounding coast. Seasonal opening arrangements may vary, so check in advance whether a tour is available when you plan to visit. The Keskiniemi Daymark and the lighthouse offer different experiences: one is a sea mark completed in 1858, while the other is a lighthouse that has been in operation for more than 150 years.
Collections and local heritage
The Kniivilä Local Heritage Museum holds more than 3,000 catalogued objects. Kniivilä Farm presents Hailuoto’s traditional livelihoods through equipment used in agriculture and livestock farming, fishing and handicrafts. The collection and the trades on display offer different insights into local heritage: catalogued objects on the one hand, and items associated with former livelihoods on the other.
In 2024, the museum opened the exhibition Meren sylissä about the history of life on Hailuoto in close connection with nature. The opening year and subject place the exhibition in a historical context without implying that it is a permanent display. Another traditional structure is the windmill in Ojakylä village. Old grain stores and a large cogwheel stand nearby.
Nature observation and recreation
At the Kirkkosalmi Birdwatching Tower, visitors can observe cormorants and birds of prey during the spring migration. The tower is also wheelchair-accessible. If birdwatching is your main interest, the spring migration provides a specific time to visit. Hyypänmäki, by contrast, is an outdoor recreation area open year-round, with easy-to-walk paths that are also suitable for families. A seasonal opportunity for birdwatching and a year-round network of trails therefore offer different ways to experience nature.
Brewery and tastings
For another Hailuoto experience, you can visit the brewery: at the Hailuoto Brewery Pub & Shop, visitors can enjoy beer on site and buy beer to take away. The brewery also organises tours and guided beer tastings. A visit focused on brewing adds another way to experience the area, alongside its hiking trails, maritime heritage and museums.
