A cultural walk, a collection of more than 700 milk cans and bridges with very different construction histories give Ylivieska a distinct character. The city also has a cultural centre with changing exhibitions and Huhmari, a viewpoint overlooking the Ostrobothnian landscape. If you are planning a stay, you can get a sense of the city through its cultural sites, buildings and travel connections.

Cultural Walk and Museums

The local heritage trail was put together in 2007 by the Ylivieska Heritage Society and developed over the years into a cultural walk. You can explore the route on your own or with a guide. This offers two different ways to discover the local sites along the walk: at your own pace or as part of a guided tour.

The Maitokannumuseo displays more than 700 milk cans from 15 different countries. The collection’s size and international origins give the museum a clearly defined focus. Helaalan Mylly offers a different historical perspective: the mill was originally built in 1884 and restored to its original form in 1942. Together with the heritage trail, these sites offer different ways to explore Ylivieska’s cultural history.

Puuhkala and Akustiikka

The Puuhkalan kotiseutumuseo evokes the atmosphere of times gone by through its courtyard and buildings. Its summer programme includes the Kesäkahvila Kerttu café, guided museum tours and various events about culture and traditional knowledge. These offerings are seasonal; if you would like to combine your visit with an event or tour, check the dates for your travel period. The museum grounds are also home to the relocated studio of Simo Pälli, which offers a glimpse into an authentic artist’s workshop.

The Akustiikka cultural centre hosts events and exhibitions throughout the year. Leading Finnish artists as well as local artists perform on its stage, and the exhibitions change monthly. Unlike the seasonal offerings in Puuhkala, Akustiikka is a year-round cultural attraction with a regularly changing programme.

Bridges, Railway Station and Getting There

Ylivieska’s bridges also differ in their design and history. Savisilta was built in 1912 to a design by J. Castrén. It is a five-span beam and cantilever bridge, has since been repaired, and is restricted to pedestrians and cyclists. The Raudaskylä suspension bridge crosses the Kalajoki in Raudaskylä, near Ylivieska. It is 80 metres long, is also for pedestrians and cyclists, and is described as a popular bridge. Anyone interested in bridges will find two structures here with different designs and documented histories.

Ylivieska railway station was completed in 1886. The Feriatis monument, marking the 100th anniversary of the Ostrobothnia Railway and designed by Antonio da Cuda, is also located there. Roads connect the city from all directions, and rail services run from the south, north and east. The bus station is right next to the railway station. Check the timetable for your chosen connection for your travel dates.

A View of the Landscape

Huhmari is the highest point in Ylivieska and offers a view of the Ostrobothnian landscape. This viewpoint adds a landscape perspective to the sites that are more focused on culture and architectural history. When planning your trip, you can choose between museums and cultural attractions, bridges, and a view across the landscape, rather than reducing the experience to a single theme.
