An 18.7-kilometre hiking trail, museums covering traditional agriculture, electrical engineering and crafts, and a canoe route from the town centre to the coast give Paimio several distinct travel highlights. The range of options is useful when planning: you can choose shorter sections of the Paimion polku, while culture, river landscapes and winter sports offer separate themes to explore.

Hiking and Paddling

The Paimion polku is 18.7 kilometres long in total and can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. It runs mostly along forest trails over rocky terrain and through woodland. Some sections follow gravel roads, while short stretches use roads with light traffic. From a high hill, the view extends to Paimionlahti Bay. When planning a trip, you can choose between shorter sections and the full route.

The Paimionjoki canoe route runs from Jokipuisto in the centre of Paimio to Paimionlahti Bay by the sea. It passes through quiet river landscapes on its way to the coast. The route is easy and suitable for beginners and families. Hiking, mountain biking and paddling offer different ways to experience the landscape of Paimio.

Museums and Local History

The cultural history museum Paimion kotiseutumuseo, maintained by the City of Paimio, consists of seven museum buildings. Around 1950, they were moved from different parts of Paimio to Museomäki in Oinila. The buildings illustrate the history of traditional agriculture.

The specialist museum Paimion Sähkömuseo, located in the centre of Paimio, explores the history of electrical engineering and lets visitors try out various electrical devices. The Miila Crafts Museum, by contrast, focuses on everyday craft culture. It is housed in a functionalist building in the town centre.

The August Pyölniittu Museum is in the village of Maljamäki in Paimio. It preserves the home and workplace of self-taught scientist August Pyölniittu, as well as the modest family life of his sisters Ida and Olga on a smallholding. The property was converted into a museum in the 1980s.

The museum themes range from traditional agriculture and everyday crafts to electrical engineering and a preserved home and workplace. Those interested in exploring Paimio’s history will find a variety of perspectives here, rather than a single unified museum theme.

Landscapes and Routes

The Lower Paimionjokilaakso, along the lower reaches of the Paimionjoki, is a nationally valuable landscape area in Finland. The Kuninkaantie, Finland’s oldest tourist road, also passes through Paimio. Both facts give the river landscape and the road route a distinct place in getting to know the region.

Winter Sports and Mountain Biking

The Paippi ski tunnel makes cross-country skiing possible outside the main winter season. One lap is 700 metres long, and the tunnel is six metres wide. You can ski there using either the classic or freestyle technique. Operating arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

Varasvuoren mäkikeskus is one of Finland’s regional ski jumping centres. It has five A-class ski jumping hills covered with plastic mats: K2, K8, K15, K29 and K58. The mats allow training almost year-round.

The Helmi MTB mountain bike trail network opened on 21 May 2022. At the opening, the first phase included a challenging 6 km trail, an easier 3 km trail and a short track of about 300 metres. The route layout may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.

Getting There by Public Transport

Föli buses run regularly to the town of Paimio from Turku. Public transport is therefore an option for both day trips and longer stays. Routes and timetables may change; check your connection before departure.
