Merijärvi combines a distinctive location for its church village with culture, a public beach and the Flatland Route for touring cyclists. Other destinations in the municipality add winter activities and a striking river landscape. This lets you choose between exploring the church village and taking trips to other places in the municipality.
Church Village, Church and Local Heritage Museum
The church village lies on an isthmus between the lakes Tähkijärvi and Merijärvi, which were drained to create farmland. Its location describes a place between two lakes whose areas were drained for agricultural use.
Merijärvi Church was built in 1781. It is a wooden cruciform church with a four-sided lantern tower at its centre. Its organ dates from 1882, 101 years after the church was built, and is considered historically valuable. The year of construction, the basic form and the organ each offer different clues to the history of the church interior.
The Merijärvi Local Heritage Museum is on Kirkonmäki, next to the church in the centre of the village, at Kirkkotie 14, 86220 Merijärvi. The museum is housed in a former communal grain loan granary, which was converted and furnished with extensive collections for use as a museum. The exhibition features farming items from life in Merijärvi in earlier times. The local heritage museum is open seasonally in summer; check the current opening days before your trip.
Beach and Flatland Route
The public Lahdenlammen beach is in the centre of the village at Uitontie 19. In summer, Kalajoki Environmental Health Services monitors the water quality at Merijärvi’s public beaches. Check local conditions before swimming.
Merijärvi is included in the Flatland Route for touring cyclists. This easy-to-ride, flat circular cycling route runs along the Baltic Sea coast in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa, is 320 kilometres long and consists mostly of gravel roads. Five to six days are estimated for completing the entire route. This estimate applies to the circular route, not to Merijärvi alone. Outdooractive is used for digital navigation. Other Destinations in the Municipality
In the municipality of Merijärvi, the municipality maintains cross-country ski trails with a total length of about 11 kilometres, of which 6 kilometres are lit. Grooming and lighting are seasonal. Check conditions if you plan to use them.
At Ristivuori in the village of Pyhänkoski, a log cabin with six beds can be rented through the Merijärvi 4H Association. Possible uses include family celebrations, sauna evenings, meetings and get-togethers. Ristivuori also has a 200-metre ski slope with a vertical drop of 30 metres; the 4H Association is responsible for its operation. From there, a marked hiking route leads to the church village of Merijärvi. The distance to the church is about 9 kilometres; in winter, a cross-country ski trail runs along the route. Check seasonal trail conditions before setting out. The 200 metres refers to the slope’s length, while the roughly 9 kilometres is the distance to the church—two different measurements to bear in mind when planning for winter.
Near Pyhänkoski, a river flows through a steep-sided gorge bordered by rock. Towards its lower reaches, the greatest drop in elevation is 22 metres. This landscape in the municipality is on a different scale from the isthmus where the church village lies between the drained lakes.
